Hi Guy's
Well I am now 12 weeks into learning the Steel, and this is my most ambitious song yet. This version is credited to George Jones, with a little bit of Me in there somewhere.
I thought I had bitten off more than was good for me when I started to learn it,and it has taken 2 weeks to get this far.
The backing track is a Karaoke file I found on the internet, and the Steel is played through my new Fender Steel King Amp.
Nothing left to say except, thanks to everyone for the emails, encouragement, and help.
Your comments as always are more than welcome, good or bad, just tell me if I'm getting it right.
You can download the file here

Thanks for listening.
Regards
Alan

aa aa hum(throat clearing).
Well Alan,I can't help to think my leg is being pulled, but having said that.
Great job! For twelve weeks, would be respectable for twelve months. Great timing, intonation, phrasing, nice arrangement. Keep it up, at the rate your going, you'll be a monster player someday.

Hi Alan
Just listened to your version of the classic
"She Thinks I still Care" You are making great progress on the steel, keep up the good work. Did you get the tuning problems sorted out? ... Ted |

Hi Dean
Thanks for your kind comments.
May I say that your leg is not being pulled,I wouldn't do that, I really have only been playing for 12 weeks.
I played 6 string for 40 years, maybe that has something to do with it?
Hi Ted
Thanks for the reply,I am glad you liked the tune.
Regarding the tuning problem,I think I have sorted it enough not to bother Wolfgang about it,we will put it down to user error, but I will reserve the right to hassle you should the need arise LOL.
Regards
Alan

That is very good playing for a "beginner", Alan. I really enjoyed it. Nicely in tune, and the blocking is clean.
My main suggestion is that you add the A+F pedal position to your bag of tricks. It will help tie things together in the places where you're moving the bar 5 frets down from the IV to the I chord (or the I to the V). Often you'll only need to move two frets down to get the note you want with A+F.

It's got a nice "bouncey" feel, and it's apparent by the syncopation and note choice you've been playing music for a long time.
Good Job! |

Hi Allen
If I knew you could play that well, I would not have sent you Volume 1.If you send me your address again,I'll show the A and F,the first string usage, and more.
By the way. One to two.3/86&5AB is C.From there try 3/86&5 ABD,then release the A pedal. You have gone from C to D7,stayed in the same fret, and have a different sound.
Address please . Bill |

It sounds good for the short time you have been playing. Keep on practicing, you will become addicted to the steel like the rest of us. |

LOVE IT!
Your style of playing reminds me of steel playing of the early 60's. Very simple and not alot of 'extra.'
I enjoy this greatly.

OK, I give up. Now I know just how much my blocking sucks.
Alan, that is so cool, 12 weeks or not.
By the way, could you post a link to the backing track location?

More improvement Alan and that Steel King sounds sweet (v. jealous). What b0b says about A+F & don't forget to add some nice slow bar vibrato on those sustained notes (see Bruce Bouton for how).
I haven't forgotten about backing tracks... where does all the time go? |

Alan great job..thanks for posting.
I would also just add..like b0b mentions AF movements,
but also do not be afraid to use those E levers, raise/lower..
get them incorporated into your study , work them into your phrasing and an entire NEW sound will emerge from what you already have going on...
great job, especially so early on...
I hate you
