Brought my "brand new" 6 and 4 S10 Bud to its first gig . All I can say is wow... What tone man,... All my pals here that told me what a great pickup the BL 710 is, are correct. It really does keep the "traditional" Bud sound, but with added hair!... SO sweet and full. All Bud.

I cranked up my cheesy little distortion unit, played a few bluesy lap steel type licks and was thrilled at the woody, throaty, vintagy, overdriven tone she had too.. Like an old National or something..

The keyboard guy looked over and said "wow, lets hear some more of THAT!"

Sustained great, played soft and wonderful. [MY hacksaw home made undercarriage parts too!!],and most importantly, remained BLESSEDLY in tune!! Never touched the wrench!...

My history with Buds is long and rocky, I love them dearly, but once I get one on a few gigs, I feel like hacking them to bits and stoking the woodstove..usually due to tuning issues..
This old 2/1 changer model REALLY seems like a keeper however... She really seems to behave beautifully for an old clunker, and the changer is really a nice piece of engineering.. they should have kept this design and just added an additional lower to it...

Anyway, I am again firmly in the Bud camp, and at least for awhile, my beloved Carter will stay home and do practice and studio duty. Last year on this same site I vowed I would NEVER own another Bud after a BAD experience with my last one, but I was wrong as usual... anyway ,I guess Ricky is right.. as far as Buds go ,for me at least, older is better. Some Buds have the mojo, some don't... This old girl sure talks to me.... bob

Bob, are you sure you are not reviewing a wine for the New York Times?

Actually, a nice compendium of steel guitar sound adjectives would probably look like a wine tasters dictionary ("nutty' yes, but not the "fruity" part).

Congrats on the new (or renewed) sound.

That's living proof that all guitars are NOT created equal!! Hearing "that tone" is what keeps you coming back---you can't get away!! HA!!

Good to hear Bob, I remember your older posts trying to get the tone you wanted from a Carter PU. Ohhhh that illusive sweet spot!

Bob-I know what you mean. I have a Sho-Bud Pro 1 S10, which I looked long an hard for and got it from an original owner.

I had a rack and Barrel S10 with 5/5 for 16 years ,and was sorry I sold it to get a S12.

My Pro 1 had 3 and 2 and I had it upgraded to a E6 with 6 and 5 and am very happy with it..al

Hey Bob; that is so great man, that your diggin'. I knew you would; as it just killed me to hear of your dislikes with the Sho-bud; as in the past you always were speaking of the later model Sho-bud...ha.
The single rasie/single lower and double raise/single lower fingers that the lower and raise bars are horizontal; are the finest sounding and easiest playing fingers shobud ever made. Yes they are old technology; but I can do with my single/single anything any new modern pedal steel can; but sounds so real in terms of the original sound that envited me to the pedal steel sound in the first place.
I'm glad you finally reached down and got a real sho-bud....and now your reaping the rewards....good for you.

All Buds are not created equal either... my model 6139 and Lawrence pickup sounded like thin, brittle shrieks. Not some of my other Buds, though.
