To begin I'd like to pay my respects to the late Buck Owens.
Then I have question. Do most of you folks tuck the ring and pinky finger of your right hand under your palm, and how many let them stay straight? Mel Bay says you can do either but I wanted to know what most folks find better.
thanks,
Kurt

Everyone's Tendon's in their hands are different; and one should never put their hand in a position that overly binds the movement or inhibits the freely moving finger motion you need for your own particular hand.
So you will find as many different hand positions as there are players.
The beginning instructional books and very good teachers; will show you several hand/finger positions for you to work with; and you will settle and should figure out which one is the most easiest for your particular structure.
I mainly keep both pinky and ring fingers extended out in a non-binding fassion most the time. But I also change that from time to time; depending on what pickin' style I may be approaching; but you don't learn that in your first years of playing; that becomes a ability after years and years of bettering your technique.
Have fun.

Wille and Ricky, thanks very much for your time and your advice. I'm sure I'll ask for both again.
