Anybody ever check out Buddy Charleton's approach to harmonics? (stupid question I know as I'm sure everyone has by now). I have never seen anywhere where an instructor shows this approach to them. My hand won't even bend, or even get close to this - chimes are definitely not my strong suit anyway.

Mine neither! Laughing Harmonics, or chimes, are something that a lot of players have their own approach to. Our personal physiology sometimes dictates what we can or can't do easily and comfortably. Once you realize what needs to be done, as far as picking and where your "touch point" needs to be, most of us find something that works for us. Some players use the palm or palm edges, some use the tip or side of a finger like Charleton did, and others use a knuckle. All methods can work well with a lot of practice, but I don't feel beginners should spend a whole lot of time early on trying to master it. Once you have all the other playing basics down pretty well, then you can work on these little "extras" that will add depth and variety to your playing. Mr. Green

Sonny Curtis (George Jones former steel player) showed me how to curl your hand and use the ring finger on your right hand to make chimes. His were/are as clear as Buddy Charleton's. The two Buddy's were masters at Chimes - IMO.
