Not sure where this question belongs. There's an instrument on eBay that I have my eye on, and it's shipping from Japan. Will I get hit with extra fees, and if so, how much? Can anyone out there with experience help?
This is at the bottom of the post.

International Shipping - items may be subject to customs processing depending on the item's declared value.
Sellers set the item's declared value and must comply with customs declaration laws.
As the buyer, you should be aware of possible:
- delays from customs inspection.
- import duties and taxes which buyers must pay.
- brokerage fees payable at the point of delivery.

John,

I purchased an expensive acoustic guitar thru Ebay, that shipped out of Japan. I had the same concerns you have stated. The guitar had to ship to the USA, ($250.00). My son forwarded the instrument to me in the Middle East, thru the USPS, ($50.00) and I eventually shipped it home with my household goods. I never paid extra fees, unless they were included in the $250.00 charge.

Depends where the instrument was built. If U.S.A. and it's returning there are no Govt imposed fees.

If country of origin is elsewhere than it depends.

Be sure to check the note about prohibited materials.

John, I bought a Greco from Japan a couple years back. Bought it for $700, paid roughly $100 in extra charges - note that I’m in Canada.

If the instrument has rosewood on it, you'll get snagged by the CITES patrol, needing documentation on where the rosewood originated.

Or you could take your chances and see if they balk on the rosewood.

If it was made anywhere other than America, you may pay import duties on it. If it has ivory on it, the Fish and Wildlife will stick their claws into you for that.
