Tonight I was adjusting LKR, and I happened to glance around at the rest of the mechanism and saw this.
Notice that on pedal 1 there are three raises. They are on strings 5, 6 and 10. Six has the half stop tuner.
I never noticed it before, but after playing the LeGrande for the last six months, the push/pull was sounding distinctly odd. Does anybody actually use a P1 S6 raise on E9?
Note: the photo is a "safety" photo I took before I started my re-rod. I did not work the E9 side of the guitar at all except to add the Franklin change on pedal 4.
The good news is that pedal 1 feels a whole lot better, and now I have an extra half stop tuner.

Charlie, the 6th string raise on your A pedal is used for the split tuner effect like you have on a LeGrande. You know.Lower the 6th a whole tone, F# then your G note could be tuned out on the A pedal....bb [This message was edited by Bobby Boggs on 22 March 2006 at 06:28 PM.] |

Charles - Are you talking about a push/pull? (The picture isn't showing at this time.) If so, the tuner under the guitar probably doesn't do anything to the 6th string if the A pedal is used alone. It only raises the string one-half step after it has first been lowered a whole step, probably with a knee-lever.
Bobby, is that what you are saying?

Thanks for the info guys. I think you've hit it.
The guitar pictured is a push/pull. I bought it a year ago and played the heck out of it for 3 months. Unfortunately it was missing several of the standard Emmons copedant changes (and the mechanism scared me) so I bought a LeGrande 3 off Ebay. Although it was listed as straight Emmons, the LeGrande had a strange setup too, and I spent a lot of time (and a bit of money) changing it to standard Emmons, but it worked out well, and I've been playing the LeGrande exclusively since August. The push/pull is like an old friend, and I hated to see it just sitting there, so with the confidence I gained from working on the LeGrande I tackled the push/pull on Feb 23. I finished the major work on March 15, but I'm still futzing around checking it out and fine tuning things.
I've discovered that the E9 string 5 and 10 1/2 step lower on LKV needs a 1/2 stop tuner because of the Franklin change string 5 and 10 full step lower on pedal 4. This half stop tuner will not be reachable with the guitar upright. I guess that's why the Franklin change is not recommended for push/pull.
Sorry about the confusing post. I tried to compress too much info into too little space (and I think I've just done it again .

Re adjust your vertical knee travel.Tune it at the knee stop.Just a thought..
If you have any spare rods from your LIII change over. I might be interested....bb
Edit: I got to thinking. Are you wanting the vertical to lower both B's to A's with a 1/2 stop. This in addition to the Franklin pedal. Or are you wanting the vertical to only lower the B's a 1/2????[This message was edited by Bobby Boggs on 23 March 2006 at 08:12 PM.] |

If you want to lower the B's a whole step with a pedal and a half-step with the knee-lever, you would need to tune the half-step lower under the guitar. Those tuners can be tough to get to on a lower on a push/pull. I had some on my old U-12 Emmons. Thank goodness the guitar was very stable and I rarely had to touch those tuners.
