I’ll probably be igniting a firestorm but, heck, every other instrument has a list where you read the make & model and say, “Yeah, of course.â€
In no particular order......
1) Any Bigsby
2) Fender blond D8, T8 or quad Stringmaster
3) Emmons bolt-on D10, Black
4) Emmons Le-Grande III
5) Sho-Bud LDG, round front
6) Franklin D10
7) Zum Hybrid D10
 Sho-Bud (?model?)
9) ?

Sorry, I need at least 12. I guess I'm gonna use the word "classic" in a different sense than the vintage guitar world does, to include what I see as either vintage or modern "classics". To me, these guitars tend to define a particular approach in their era and were heavily adopted by premier and influential players of that era.
1. Any pre-war Rickenbacher with horseshoe pickup
2. Any Bigsby (and I'd include the outstanding repros or Clinesmiths in that vein)
3. Any 50s or 60s Fender console
4. Sho Bud Permanent and Fingertip
5. Fender 400/800/1000/2000
6. Any Emmons push-pull, especially wraparound
7. ZB
8. Sho Bud LDG or Pro I/II with barrels-behind-2-hole-pullers
9. Franklin
10. Emmons Legrande
11. ZumSteel, especially later-models and hybrid
12. Mullen G2
This is sort of chronological, more or less. I think it would need more like 20 to really capture all the main steels. I mean, how do you leave out MSA? And yet, the verdict of history is that more well-known players played Sho Buds and Emmons in that period, and they command much higher prices than vintage MSAs. I believe every one I've listed has a lot of high-profile proponents in their respective era. |
