I just recieved my new Carter-Starter yesterday, and I must say that I am very very pleased with this unit both in terms of quality & playability as well as sound!I've had several local "steelers" comment on the "great vintage single-coil" sound of this guitar. I'm just curious as to the "make" of the pick-up - I had heard that these guitars came with Bill Lawrence pick-ups, but also heard that a change was made a while ago. Just wondering about the origin (who/where) makes the pick-up in the new Carter-Starter.....Cheers - J.J. |

Mr. Jeffries:
Actually, John Fabian is the primary designer of the Carter-Starter (with some input from Bud Carter).
The pickup on the Carter-Starter was designed by Bud Carter and we have it manufactured for us by one of our vendors who also makes pickups for EMG, btw. Earlier models of the Carter-Starter did have a Bill Lawrence pickup until this change was made.
Bill Lawrence pickups are still offered as options on our PRO model Carters and Magnums.
If you have other questions, please feel free to contact us directly by phone or email.

I have EMG active pickups on one of my 6 string guitars and love the sound. Is there any possibiity that this vendor will make them for steel?

Pat, I know EMG made 3 sets of prototype D-10 pickups several years ago, but I don't know what happened to them. (And of course, I play a U-12 so they wouldn't do me any good anyway.)
There is no mention of a steel guitar pickup on the EMG web site.

I hope they decide to start making them for steel. I think such a pickup would be very successful. (For those who are unfamiliar with them, these pickups have a built in preamp and require a 9 volt battery.) |

I though Bobbe had an EMG for sale, maybe a while back? I've got EMG's in one of my Telecasters, it's great, especially with a bunch of effects---TOTALLY noiseless! |

wow..it's Monday AM and already the week started with a miracle..
In another thread about Tele PUPS I commented that the EMG active PUPS on one of the band Teles is the best ever..
this means that Mike P, Stephen G and me ( Tony P) ALL agree on something at the same time in the same thread !
I'm thinking this probably means I should go back to bed for the rest of the week and start again next week !..( or maybe Mike and Stephen should )
Active EMG Steel PUPS..now that would be the ticket....

A battery-powered steel guitar pickup would seemingly put a lot of the passive volume pedal & line-loading problems to rest - I would want some sort of volume pot on it somewhere to match line levels, though. |

EMG also makes actve tone controls. I've got them in the guitar with the pickups.
I don't know how much of the sound is from the pickups and how much from the controls (and how much from the guitar itself) but the guitar is not just louder and quieter than any of my others, it has this incredible in-your-face presence.
John or Ann, if you're reading this, maybe you could get your vendor to make EMG stule active pickups for you that you could sell both in your guitars, and to players of other brands.
I bet they'd be very popular once people became aware of how good they sound. |

John, I purchased a Carter Starter in 2002 and have hauled it all over Texas and Oklahoma. It does show signs of wear but it stills stays in tune like you would want it to. I have really thought about selling it but it's part of my family now. I'll soon ask John Fabian to bring it back to new condition and then I'll always have a quality back-up guitar. You made a wise choice with Carter. Good Luck . RG |
