The Blackbird is expensive (over $100 more than a Black Box) and I question the 12AX7 operation. With a 24 V power supply the voltage would have to be raised to a couple hundred volts to get a true class A amp, like the Black Box.

The Blackbird pre amp looks like 12V power. The Quilter is 24V and that’s the power amp that can fit right on your pedal board. It's not Class A, its a class D digital amp.

I have no idea what the actual plate voltages in this unit but with a class D power supply, they could easily DC to DC convert from low voltage like 24 volts to 120 or even 240 volts!

From this site:

http://www.bestguitareffects.com/effectrode-blackbird-sr-71-review-best-pre-amp-pedal/

"All Tube: The Blackbird is an entire tube preamp section in a pedal format. The signal path is 100% pure analogue built with vacuum tubes operating at amp plate voltages. D.C. powered tube heaters ensure absolute quietest possible operation.
Audiophile Components: Absolutely no skimping on the quality of the components – polyester capacitors and instrumentation grade metal-film resistors are used throughout the audio signal path. Find out more about the Effectrode engineering ethos on component quality here!"

More information onthe miniature B9A tubes (12AX7, 12AU7 and 12AT7 types) used in this unit here:

https://www.effectrode.com/knowledge-base/signal-tubes/

More info from mfg. site:

The 12AX7 has the highest gain factor of any preamp tube type and the Blackbird ships as standard with a trio of these tubes fitted. This gives the pedal greatest range and flexbility for overdrive sounds as it increases the input sensistivity and clipping occuring in the tube circuitry so that the Blackbird can generate harmonically saturated overdrive at higher ‘Gain’ control settings.

Swapping tubes in the Blackbird will drastically alter the way it sounds and responds to playing dynamics. For example, a JAN Philips 5751 tube in centre position and Tung-Sol 12AY7 in bottom position will yield, lower gain for a more much more bluesy tone and feel. Additionally, setting the ‘Treble’ control at about 2 o’clock and ‘Middle’ at 9 to 10 o’clock will make the gain channel sound similar to the clean channel voicing.

Blackbird Preamp

Like the Tube Drive the Blackbird gain channel is all tube, however its signal path is based on more orthodox amp circuitry as utilised by the likes of Alexander Dumble, Mike Soldano and Randall Smith (Mesa Boogie), that is, cascaded gain stages with a passive Bass-Mid-Treble tonestack. So the gain channel inside the Blackbird has four cascaded tube clipping stages followed by a tube buffer. There are two modes of operation ‘Classic’ or ‘Creamy’. In ‘Classic’ mode the tubes are biased to clip the signal asymmetrically, introducing some even order harmonic distortion. From Fig. 5 below it can be seen that waveform distortion is relatively low generating subtle or mild overdrive.

The Blackbird’s ‘Creamy’ mode is biased so that the tubes clip the signal more symmetrically introducing a higher proportion of odd order harmonic distortion and a good dose of even order harmonic distortion too so that sound still retains that signature tube richness and warmth. This mode also has higher gain than the ‘Classic’ mode. Again, although the clipping distortion is symmetrical the waveform crest factor is much peakier (see Fig. 6 below) than the Tube Drive and Mercury pedals, and you guessed it, sounds quite different too.

Thank you for your answers, I tell you if you try the preamp blackbird with Quilter or the Dv Mark that you see in the photos you will be amazed by the sound you have, nothing to do with Peavey Nashville series amp, you will have a perfect sound as you have always dreamed tells you one that is looking for a bgrande sound like Franklin, in my steel WBS custom I installed a pick up BL 705 Chrome, now I have the sound that I have always wanted. Greetings Francesco
