The lick is at :43-44 seconds. It's one of the coolest licks I've heard. I can only assume that it's too hard to play because I've only heard it in 2 other places - Jimmy Day's Georgia Steel Guitar, and I know I've heard Buddy Charleton do it somewhere but can't remember where. Anyone have any ideas about how this lick is played?

I think it's open strings then fretted on 12th fret! |

It all sounds pretty hard to me!

Have you tried slowing the speed to say 50% and listening to it? |

Ha! You're right Roger! I first heard this lick played by Jimmy Day, and always thought it was just cool. Here it is - the lick starts at the .53 second mark:

Norman, When I started trying to learn music off of records, I really had no way to slow anything down (some of the old turntables still had the 16 RPM speed, but you couldn't tell much at that speed). So, I kind of trained my ear to learn things "at speed". Later on, I ran into some guys who did this but it seemed kind of plodding to me. And, by that time I could already hear things at speed. I was just thinking that this might have been a particular "technique" that someone may have been familiar with. |

yes indeedy
on 4WD it's hammer-ons at the 12th and 11th fret with pedal 5 down. pretty hard to play it clean! _________________ 1965 Emmons S-10, 3x5 • Emmons LLIII D-10, 10x12 • JCH D-10, 10x12 • Beard MA-8 • Oahu Tonemaster |

Thanks again Donny - I knew I'd heard Buddy C play it somewhere! (and this one is on video which kind of gives me what I was asking for in this post) Four Wheel Drive, and this is way down the road for me haha! But it is a very neat lick. I'm glad though, that it wasn't really over done by those guys - kings of taste they were!

I'm sure it is hard Scott. Jimmy's is the most expansive of them, as he does it in two different positions. |
