I ran into a guy that has this for sale. He got it in a trade and he doesn't play. He is asking me to make the offer because he doesn't know what to ask for it.
I am curious as to what you all think it is worth as I am not familiar with a guitar like this. The guitar belonged to the father of the guy he got it from. He was told it was ordered custom made for him from the factory.
Both the guitar and the case are in mint condition.
Open to thoughts and ideas.
Here are some pics.

It looks like a very nice non-pedal Derby.

Is the neck selector switch on the back apron of the guitar? Looks like a rocker switch back there. |

Yes, the Derby neck selector switch is on the back apron.
I'm not familiar with this particular guitar, but it appears to be one of the earlier 90s model judging by the decal and changer mount.
Charlie would take orders for unusual guits sometimes.
Check out those big braces welded to the end plates. Probably no body flex there! |

I spoke to the wife of Derby’s maker and she stated that she couldn’t recall her husband making a D8 non pedal. |

I have no doubt about it’s authenticity. The Derby paperwork is in the case. I also think if someone was gonna fake it, they would more likely fake a ShoBud or Emmons which is a much more recognizable name to the lesser educated player. I was more curious as to the general census of its monetary worth. (Discarding the “whatever someone is willing to pay†theory.
I also doubt Charlie’s wife handed him the parts when he built it. Even more so if she doesn’t recall it. |

The Excel, Jerry Byrd model, double neck guitar like this usually goes for around $1,000.
I would think this would approximate the value of this guitar.

Sometimes builders got unusual orders. Recently a T-8 Sierra was listed on the forum. If I'm not mistaken I've seen a Williams non pedal. Same with pedal steels. Most builders for the last 40 years have built primarily 10 or 12 string models but a few 8 strings were ordered. Recently a D-8 pedalmaster was listed on the forum. I certainly feel this steel is built by Derby. |

It's all Derby. I know Charlie built a few no pedal guitars and other custom builds besides his standard SD and D10 pedal steels. I carried Little Roy Wiggins' D8 Derby to the stage for his performance at the ISGC one year.
I saw somewhere that the JB D8 console listed for 2800 new, and a few in the neighborhood of 1250 used and as little as 8 or 900.
Maybe search around here for D8 console no pedal steels in the classifieds for a comparison and estimate of value. |
