A buddy of mine has a 70's Rickenbacker Electro 6-string with a knockoff P-90 pickup. For some reason, it recently developed a bad problem with EMI buzz. We're still in the process of tracking that down (I suspect the pickup), but I discovered the strings are not grounded, and I don't see how to ground them since the plate is plastic. Of course, with this situation, touching the strings makes the buzz much worse.
Has anyone figured out how to ground the strings on one of these Electros?
Any help on the root of the problem would be welcome, of course. Pots all seem to work fine. No obvious cold solder joints. No crackle on the jack. I've put extra shielding tape in the obvious places.
Also, does anyone know of a dropin pickup replacement for these? The hole is too small for most of the pickups I've seen.
Thanks! |

From pictures I could find, it looks like the best option for grounding the strings would be to replace the plastic bridge with a metal one and ground it. _________________ Michael Brebes

I agree. Can anyone suggest a source? I guess I could fabricate one from brass, but I'm not enthusiastic about making new parts for this instrument.
BTW, I resoldered all of the joints and the worst of the buzz went away. I think my buddy is going to consider it "fixed." |

I rescued a vintage Ric carcass a while back and used a brass bridge from GeorgeBoards:
