I love my Stereo Steel with my Eminence TT-12 speaker in an open back cabinet. The GD Walker cabinets are closed back cabinets with old JBL recycled speakers. The 12" JBL's I had in my original 60's Twin weighed a ton.
My question is has anybody done a comparison between the GD Walker closed back cabinets and a open backed cabinet with a TT-12? I would love to try the Walker cabinet, but it would have to really blow away my light weight TT-12 cabinet for me to switch due to the to the weight difference. Also, are the JBL's 15" or 12" speakers in the Walker cabinets. I am guessing 15". |

George, I have a recent Stereo Steel with the closed back cabs with reconed JBL 15s. I also have one TT-12 open back. I've used the amp with both types of speakers quite a bit. Here's what I can tell you:
- Both speakers sound great.
- The stereo fx sound best to my ears with the 2 JBLs but also sound good with one JBL and one TT-12. I assume two TT-12s would sound great.
- The JBL cabs are 29 lbs. The TT-12 is about 20.
- I have the TT-12 in a Greg's Pro Audio cab. I've posted about that before with pics. Travis pointed me to that cab.
- I've been using one JBL cab on most gigs, using 3 different amp heads and I guess I prefer it over the TT-12 open cab, but not by much.

Tom, this is what I was looking for, thanks. At about 1/3 less weight and only a small improvement in sound, depending on my ears, I will just stay with what I have for the moment. I would still like to try the closed back JBL cabinet sometime, most!y to see if I can get a more consistent sound from gig to gig. Always have liked JBL's. |
