I called player A, he told me player B had a guitar to sell as he was looking to buy another. I called B to verify and to chat. I called player C and told him about B and his guitar. C called B, went over that night and bought the guitar.

Talking to player D about his need for a speaker, I told him to post on the want to buy section of the fourm, he did. A close friend of his 20 minutes away had just what D wanted, done deal.

I make it a habit to check in with my fellow steelers now and then, idol chatter at best, catching up, equipment changes, health issues etc. Always good to take the time, at our age time is short, ring them up.

That's interesting, Larry.

It made me think about how rarely I get to communicate with other steel players to exchange ideas and discuss music. When I go off 'on the road' to do a show somewhere for a few weeks the interaction with other musicians is one the perks of my job but there's never a steel player among them.

My last venture was different, though. I subbed for Russ Wever (an old friend of mine) in Overland Park, KS for three weeks and this meant me arriving in time to watch Russ play the show - it was nice to catch up and it was stimulating to hear another player's approach to the music.

Then, on my way home, I visited Junior Mercer in Sevierville, TN. (I had met Junior briefly about fifteen years ago and we've been in touch lately as he took my place when I quit the Medora Musical in ND last year.) He helped me out a lot with some issues I'd been having on my Emmons (he changed some pulls around for me and generally tweaked my guitar for the better). During this process - I was there overnight - we talked of so many things. Next morning we sat and chatted again and, next thing I knew, it was early afternoon! We both remarked that 'It's a pity we don't live nearer to each other'.

I have found that communicating one-on-one with both of these excellent players did me nothing but good and renewed my enthusiasm for music in general and pedal steel guitar in particular.

Then, on the last leg of my journey home I met with Jack Stoner just off I-75 and we hung out for a very pleasant hour or so.

It's not quite what you've described above but it's a reminder that all of us have ideas - on music, equipment, techniques, tour experiences - that should be shared. This Forum is a great place to start, of course, but it's better in-person.
