I'm not a local, but planning my first trip. Dots in Wahiawa on Mondays usually plays host to the Bobby Ingano trio. Maybe also La Mariana Sailing Club on Tuesdays? And Alan Akaka plays Friday nights at Dukes in Waikiki. I heard that Jeff Au Hoy does the Aulani luau but can't confirm that.

Plenty of other music it seems but depends what kind of music you're after...if like me, the old style stuff, it seems a bit few and far between.

The other thing I've heard, the Polynesian Cultural Center up in La'ie is said to feature the steel (being the homeplace of Joseph Kekuku, the inventor of the instrument). Note, this is all assuming O'ahu...no idea what if any steel guitar goes on on the other islands outside of the steel guitar festivals...

Oh, there's Greg Sardinha, too:

The Polynesian Cultural Center had a fine band with a pro steel player last time I was visiting - at least 10 years ago. I assume they still have a good show.

I'm planning on going to the Diamond Head Luau (various non musical reasons of convenience)...no steel guitar it looks like but hey I can always volunteer to bring mine Very Happy I'm also really hoping the local old timers organize something for Alfred Apakas 100th birthday...part of the reason I picked the date! If nothing else I'll go down to the Tapa Tower lobby and put on my own little tribute lol!

If Jeff isn't playing steel at the Aulani Luau its probably Casey Olsen. Jeff is also at the hula mound or Halekulani House without a Key on Tuesdays. Monday evening from 5-7 Theres music outside the lobby of the Hyatt Waikiki that you may catch Jeff or Kapono Lopes playing steel.
