Anyone tried this pedal for recording or live work? It looks good.

It is good. It's very fiddly once you open the USB connected GUI to it. There's a gain staging GUI-part you have to get right to get the patches to balance.

Not sure it's all that for steel, but for six string it does what ( at least I) would expect. For me at least, the amp itself handles steel and I need a modeller mainly for six string.

I liked it less in the F/X loop than I liked it in front of the amp. The unit "cares" about what level you're sending to it. It seems to ... adapt to the level (?). Not 100% sure about that last bit.

The "Twin" model doesn't do much for me but the "Deluxe" one works well, and the various Marshall patches are fine. You won't actually replace a Plexi with this and a tube amp but it's in the right direction. As with most DI stuff these days, the emphasis in te patches is on more "metal" tones but it offers a good selection of lower gain sounds.

Make sure you have a mechanically secure power connection to it. One night at rehearsal, I had a
loose AC connection to the AC adapter and it sort of "scrambled it's brain".

For the FireBox itself, you will probably need the toggle switches to where you can reach them if you are going to change patches. If you want foot switches to change patches, you'll need the AmpliFire6 or AmpliFire12. They are spendier. They offer MIDI. I prefer the AmpliFireBox because I can keep it on my keyboard. I'm on six string and keys these days...

Make sure you have phantom off if you connect via the XLR.

I listened to the clean sounds on the demos and they didn't sound great. It seems to be geared up for stand up guitar. I got the Sansamp para DI which I've used on a few gigs. It's not bad. You have to mix between the DI and the sansamp for the best result, it's very usable. I've been looking at what's available in these amp sims and its a minefield. Kemper is the best by a long shot but I'd like to try a valve pre and a torpedo cab sim. The Kemper is overpriced for a Steel guitar perspective, it's a pity they don't do a less complex model.
Here's a list of the contenders
Kemper

Line6 helix/ pod
Fractal
Boss gt1000
Atomic amplfire range

Two notes preamp andTorpedo cab
Sansamp
Shift line twin
Neunaber Iconoclast
Radial direct drive
Dsm omni cab
Mooer micro amps and radar
AMT cab sim cp100
Digitech cabdry
Palmer pocket
Ethos preamp
Boss fdr
Zoom range
Joyo
Nux

I'm sure there's many more

I use one frequently for recording and have used it at a couple of no-amp TV gigs. I really like it. I use the deluxe amp model and an EVM12L IR impulse for the cab sim part. I’ve put up a few clips on my instagram account where I use it straight into the audio interface.

A big plus is having actual physical knobs for the amp controls.

Well if you play that well you’re going to sound good through anything. But very impressive.

Thanks!

Yes, that's all AF-box.

Deluxe amp model -> short "soft digital" delay -> plate reverb -> cab sim (EVM12L with sennheiser 441)

Here’s another one:

Amplifirebox into a Bose S1 Pro, a nice little rechargable battery powered monitor that weighs only 16 pounds.

I've been messing around with this thing all morning and it has a lot of stuff going on. The parametric eq is seriously comprehensive. The controls are very sensitive. It's not a Kemper but its the closest I've heard so far. The cab sims are great. I particularly like the Twindeluxes, and the Mark IV. The vox and Rumble have a lot of character too.

Nicke, are the redwirez I.R.s much better than the Atomic downloads? I’ve been playing with the twindeluxe from Atomic and it’s pretty good. The rumble I.R. comes from ownhammer. I’m going to gig this thing this weekend and see how it performs. I’m just going direct and listening on IEMs.

Im playing in Casinos that will not allow amps on stage and recently bought the Firebox to run direct to the board. How are you guys importing/downloading different IR cabs from Redwirez? I bought a couple of the amp and speaker IRs but can not import them into the Firebox. This is all new to me and will be something I will have to learn to do.

When connected to your computer select cab and click on the cab name. It should give you an option to select from a file. Pick the IR and click choose and it should load. I tried some of the redwirez IRS but found them thin sounding. I think you need to mix them.... as in a bit of front mic with a room mic and a mic from behind the amp. You will need to download an app that does this like the Redwirez one which is $50. I think the twindeluxe cab that can be downloaded from the Atomic website is better than individual IRS from redwirez. Micheal Britt supplied these IRS and they are great.

Richard, I got them to load...operator error.
Redwirez have so many options on their cabinets, it almost overwhelming. I also have tried 3Sigma https://www.3sigmaaudio.com/ with good results as well as Ownhammer https://www.ownhammer.com/store/.

I used the AmplifireBox live this past weekend and although I thought I had it mixed to my liking, it didn't sound great. It still had too much sizzle on the high strings. We also had a bad overall mix.

Trap,I’ll email you a few saved settings that I’ve been using and you can see what they’re like. I used it for all my last 3 gigs and it worked great. I’ve spent a long time tweaking these so you should like them.

Ok it will be a few days before I can do this as I’m out on the road all week. Maybe if I get the right connection lead I can do it through my iPad. No I checked it’s computer only. Could be Wednesday

Trap, I got your mail but I don’t know how to reply. I’ll do that tomorrow. I’ve done a few more gigs with it with mixed results. It’s great in a concert situation when the band isn’t too loud but in on a noisy stage like a bar or dance it fares less well. You need to have control on the mix so if you have a remote mix on your iPad it makes life easier too. I know what it’s like if you don’t get a good sound in your IEMs it makes it a long gig.
