if i play a G on the 3rd fret and only add in the A pedal playing strings 456 what does the G become ? also if i just add in the B pedal alone what note is it ?
i know that with both pedals the G becomes a C
also if i play the 9th string with strings 56 does that give me a G7 with no pedals

#1 - 3 fret w/A ped = Em (D to E)

#2 - 3 fret W/B ped = Gsus4 (B to C)

#3 - Yes that would work as G7.

Hi Calvin, "Mel Bay's Deluxe Pedal Steel Guitar Method" by De Witt (Scotty) Scott contains basic exercises and tablature as well as chord charts relating to pedals and knee levers.

Sounds like you might just be starting out.

Here's something you can practice with any 2 or 3 of the main strings (10, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3 ).

3rd fret no pedals. slide up to...
6th fret with A pedal and F lever. slide up to...
10th fret with A+B pedals. That's 3 G chords.

After that, you can do the same kind of thing with C chords.
3AB to 8 (no pedals) to 11AF

Then do the same thing again (C chords) only slide all the C chords up 2 frets to get D chords.

Hope you get some ideas out of that.

actually Calvin, the notes are NOT all over the neck..but it may seem that way.

You may not need to know what the names of the notes are but that is a plus. But you should at some point know exactly what pulls are going on...but maybe not today.

What is required is an understanding of the positions and relative positions. This is a MUST.

Like Black keys and White keys...

basic elementary Pedal Steel theory.

Think of the 8th string, E, as the ROOT.

No pedals strings 4,5 and 6.. fret 0
root chord

Pedal A strings 4,5 and 6 fret 0
relative minor

Pedals AB strings 4,5 and 6 fret 0
4 chord

pedals AB strings 4,5 and 6 up to 2nd fret
5 chord
or
Pedal B and E-lower lever strings 4,5 and 6
fret 0
this is the 5 chord in a 7th variant

do this at fret 3

root G
relative minor EM
4 chord C
5 chord D or D7

at fret 5

root A
relative minor F#m
4 chord D
5 chord E or E7

etc...

Think of the 50's Doo Wop songs,,
In the Still of the Night

G, EM, C , D

that is the chord progression and that is what the basic Pedal Steel config does with minimal thought required.

extra..no charge...

B pedal by itself..strings 4,5 and 6
Suspended chord...

No pedals strings 4,5 and 6 root chord

Up Four frets with A pedal and F lever
(E raise lever)
Root chord again..next variant

This Instrument ( E9th Tuning ) with 3 pedals and a few knee levers is probably
one of the most brilliant configurations we will ever come across for a musical Instrument. The foreFOUNDERS did it right.

It does not matter how many Steels we own or have owned..this stuff is the common link for all of them. Learn it on one..it's the same for all...

good luck

I think of the a pedal as a sixth, or thirteenth, (or relative minor) and as someone already said the b pedal as a suspended fourth.

I just got Jeff Newman's E9th Chord Dictionary from Fran (for $25) and in the first readthru I learned a bunch more stuff I didn't find anywhere's else. Gotta tell ya for us learners it's worth the price. Strong buy recommendation. This stuff is in there.

Simply put, and to answer your question, the G becomes a G6, and the yes, the 9th string, no pedals, adds the 7th note, making G7.

Also, staying in the 3rd fret, I believe the B pedal alone, gives you Gsus4. (I am work, and somewhat brain dead, so please don't yell, if I'm wrong about that last one).
