Just my personal observation:
I have read a gazillion posts about tone. But after hearing some players that have what I consider a tone that is incredible, hard to define, pleasing, and impossible for me to duplicate, I have found a common denominator.
It is not the instrument.
Mark Knopfler, Jeff Beck, and Bobbe Seymour, and Wes Montgomery (I think) have one thing in common. They play without picks.
It might not be the tone you are looking for but it is unique, fat, rich, and soulful.
Skin-Tone.
