My friend (and forumite) Bob Stone is retired now but back in the 90s as a Folklorist for the State of Florida, he was the main guy responsible for bringing the tradition now known as "Sacred Steel" to light beyond the insular religious communities where the steel guitar was an integral part of church services. You can hear and download some of this history here:

Great stuff, Andy!
Your contributions to non pedal steel are wonderful.

One tech note:
To get the link to work, I had to copy the first line and then copy and paste the second line into the address bar. Pretty long link, maybe an accidental carriage return or just plain old too long?

You're welcome but ..... really, thank Bob Stone! All I did was post a link.

Bob conducted hours of interviews, directed a DVD, produced recordings for Arhoolie and wrote a book on the Sacred Steel movement ....

Thanks for your kind words Andy.

Actually, I was unaware that those interviews were posted on Floridamemory.com. It's a great resource, and digitizing and posting more archival materials is a continuing process. I can't praise the State of Florida Archives staff enough for their good work. (Search under "steel guitar" and you come up with some cool photos.)

I recently listened to a bit of my 1993 interview--25 years ago!--with Aubrey Ghent and his father, Henry Nelson. It brought back memories. From our very first meeting Henry was very welcoming, open and friendly. Henry and his sister, Mary Linzy, at whose home we met, have both since died. There has been a lot of water under the bridge...

By the way, I am currently working on producing a high quality, large format hardcover book of about 150 of my B&W sacred steel photos. At this point I have an excellent publisher interested and am optimistic about obtaining the supplementary funding to make it economically feasable. If it all works out, the book should be very reasonably priced. That said, I'm not "counting my chickens" yet. Stay tuned for further developments...

Andy, can you please go back and delete the original "mile long" link? It messes up my screen and some of Bob's post is lost on the far right.
