Topic: Anyone have a problem with a Roland cube ? |

I purchased a Roland cube 80Xl (new) some years ago and it was superb for various venues.After a while I was hearing a kinda Zing from the fourth string.
At home I tried all the obvious remedies,I changed strings several times,I checked for burrs on the changer and the rollers,I have a Zum and a Rittenberry and the zing occurs with both guitars.I have also changed pickups in both guitars.I spoke to a well respected friend who has a great knowledge of electronics and He says it is most probably the DSP (digital Signal Processor) which takes a nano second to change the analogue signal to digital.He was not a lover of DSP units and says that even the extremely expensive ones are not vastly better than the type fitted in a budget amp.
I no longer take the amp out of the house and it is used for practise only but sometimes the shrill noise from that one string annoys Me a lot.
I was wondering if any other players have experienced this.

P.S. Roland were not interested and offered no assistance even though the amp was still under warranty. |

| I had the same problem with the forth string, its not the amp, change to a 0015 and problem solved |

Thanks John,
I did try a different gauge string some time ago,I cannot now remember whether it was a 15 or a 13.
I have a couple of set ups,namely a Sarno octal pre amp and a Telonics pre amp and I still get the same result from both when I go to the cube,however when I use My TC Furlong SPLIT I have no problems at all.

| it used to drive me mad, but since changing to the 15 it been fine, I might try a 13 as well to see if that works,, you could try tuning the first string to E as that is a 13 to see if it works.. |

| FWIW, I use a Roland 80XL at band practices for both my guitar and steel. I love the way the steel sounds through it, and have not experienced the zing you describe. |

I have had an 80X, and an 80XL for several years and haven't had any trouble with either one.

| When I contacted Roland/boss and described in detail the problem I was having they said that since the warranty was valid they would arrange to have the amp uplifted for investigation.I had it packed and ready for uplifting and on the morning it was due to be picked up I received an e mail saying that their engineer had decided not to have the amp investigated,No reasons or excuses given. I do honestly believe I have a faulty dsp contraption in the amp.I will certainly not recommend Roland customer services. |
