I started a new series (my first in a long time) on my blog about building chops and the first (and next few) part is picking hand rhythm, which I think is crucial. The first post has my thoughts and a few simple exercises. It's pretty basic stuff, but in my opinion is strongly needed for lap steel players. I'll get progressively deeper with it with each new post and hopefully people (especially me!) will find it to be a good kick in the tail.

Once again, your tuition and tips are spot on. In the final analysis, it all depends on discipline. I get stuck into a regime, and then I slack off or get distracted, and end up feeling guilty.

I am fortunate that I studied Flamenco guitar back in the 1960s, and while I didn't get very far with it, it did give me a good grounding in picking logic.

Thanks for checking it out, David. I think rhythm is the most overlooked element in playing and discussion. Pitch is something that deservedly gets the most attention, but if I’m being honest, I would rather my pitch suffer than my rhythm. If you have great rhythmic phrasing, you can make almost anything sound good. But if your rhythm suffers, everything suffers.

It’s hard to face up to our shortcomings, but it’s the only way to ovecome them. Lap steel is definitely not a lazy person’s instrument. Very Happy

Yeah, I know what you are saying. I was playing some Irish fiddle in a bar yesterday, my intonation was off, in places, but my rhythm was solid. The crowd loved it. Mr. Green

Thanks for the blog Mike. I just discovered it this weekend and spent most of my spare time reading through the articles. Especially enjoying the In Conversation articles. Thanks to the names mentioned, I now have lots of players and bands to add to my listening list.
