That would include "The Porter Wagoner Show" and "Porter Wagoner In Person" LP's in 1963 and '64 respectively. Sounds like Hal Rugg on the second live album and on The "Thin Man From West Plains" album. Then maybe Pete Drake on "Confessions of A Broken Man" who made his steel sound almost like a viola, especially on Skid Row Joe. He was kinda quirky with those type of things.
Those were some truly great years for Country Music enthusiasts.
Thanks and God Bless from Bakersfield, CA. |

Thin Man and Confessions are both Pete. I was told I think in a thread on here that Hal is on the In Person album. I also read someplace that Buddy Charleton played on some of Porter's stuff. _________________ 2013 Williams D-10, 2019 Williams D-10, 1970 Fender Twin, Evans SE200, Fender Tonemaster Twin, Hilton pedal, Jagwire Strings. |

Porter’s “Howdy Neighbor, Howdy” (Jan. ‘64) featured Buddy Charleton playing one of my all-time favorite rides. It shows clearly what can be done using only the A&B pedals when you really know how to play!

the Praguefrank site is a good resource for personnel, though it's not always totally accurate and some sessions have no info available. cool to see Jimmy Day listed on several early 60s dates, and Buddy Emmons in '59

Charleton's tone!!!
I've NEVER been able to coax that tone out of a Sho-Bud-that is the textbook classic
60's Sho-Bud tone-Pete,Lloyd,Charleton,Emmons,they ALL had it!
Makes me wanna dust off my crossover and play it more, but it's too heavy to leave the house!

More favorite Buddy Charleton with Porter:

Charleton's on most (or maybe all) of Porter's "Y'all Come" album too, I think, and you can't go wrong with all that Buck Trent either!
Lloyd Green is on some of the Porter and Dolly duets, not sure about Porter's solo stuff but I'd guess Lloyd played on some of it. |

Here's one with Jimmy Day...
He foreshadows Pete's intro on"She's Actin' Single(I'm Drinkin'Doubles)"on the end!
...also,Buck's big ole 7th on the end of the turnaround-that would have 'em projectile
thowin'up down the street at Belmont University...

Steve, you have a music database in your brain that is like a computer. It's no wonder that you are such a talented player yourself.

7 March 1963 RCA Victor Studio, 1611 Hawkins St., Nashville, TN – Porter Wagoner (Producer: Chet Atkins)
139 PPA4-0187 KEEPER OF THE KEY Camden CAS-2191
If Porter cut "Keeper Of The Key" on March 7, 1963, it's possible this is the Sho-Bud (pictured below) Day was playing at the time. The image is from a ca. 1963 Price date when both Day & Emmons were doing runs with Price, alternating between steel & bass. This guitar appears to be a later Sho-Bud than Day's first one (Sho-Bud #4?).
Sho-Bud #4? from December 1959: (Jeff Bess on drums)

Bob,if that is Sho~Bud #4,might the"Half a Mind"guitar of Buddy Emmons be #3-the one later owned by Pete Drake and given back by Pete to Buddy?
That would account for the first four'Buds...Don Warden's,Ben Keith's(stolen and un- accounted for),Buddy's,and now Jimmy's?And doesn't Lynn Owsley now own the body of #4?

Steve, I don't know for sure. If you have any way of finding out, please let me know. As I have it: Don Warden #1, Ben Keith #2, Bobby Garrett #3, Jimmy Day #4, Buddie Emmons/Pete Drake #5. Emmons is quoted as jokingly telling Day, I'll build yours and if I make any mistakes, I'll know when I build mine. He is also quoted as saying Ben Keith got the first double neck.
This are just guesses on my part:
Don Warden
Ben Keith
Bobby Garrett
Jimmy Day
Buddie Emmons as D-8
Pete Drake (above guitar converted to D-10
w/ Jimmy Day's cabinet now owned by Lynn Owsley

Quick correction. I posted two photos of Jimmy Day's Permanent saying they were different guitars. I now think they're the same guitar, just modified between 1957 and 1963. Both images show "Jimmy Day" on the front apron that was engraved by Emmons who built the first Sho-Bud cabinets. It doesn't seem that Emmons would have engraved signatures on two Jimmy Day guitars. Emmons didn't build cabinets that long a time.
And speaking of the Sho-Bud Permanent tone. Here is Day on a December 1959 "Country Jamboree" filmed in Nashville and broadcast in the afternoons over WLAC. This has been posted here before but Day w/ Ferlin @ 3:30 is well worth revisiting to hear why Jimmy Day was "The Man."

Steve, I don’t think Pete played on Shes acting Single. You are talking about Gary Stewart’s version aren’t you? Weldon told me himself that he played on it unless I just completely misunderstood. _________________ Henry Matthews
