I'm very inexperienced at knowing what I want regarding sound.
I have a Milkman "The Pedal Steel" Amp (owned by my work) and a Peavy 112 I bought for myself.
I love the Milkman, it sounds very alive and organic (for lack of more intelligent way to describe it).
The Nashville 112 sounds very clean and pure, but narrow and piercing (again, my limited way to describe it). Using the common approach and setting mid to zero and still getting that sound concerns me.
I've used both in practice and performance. So my question: is a replacement speaker always a no-brainer for the 112?
Yes I need to find my own sound, but I'm looking for a shortcut from good players who may have put in, say, a PF-350 and said "this is what I wanted" or not.
Thoughts please, thanks!

HI Jon,
I have been using a couple of NV112's for quite a while. In one of them, I have a Telonics Neo speaker and in the other I have a Eminence TT-12. Even though the sound is very close, I use the one with the Eminence more unless I am hooking them both up. I had a PF-350 in one of them, loved the sound, did not love the weight. That speaker does all that PF says it does. It adds weight.
I think that you do not have your settings correct on the amp. Try this, Bass -3 to +3, Mid-12 to -15, shift 6-700, Treble -3 to +3, Presence -9 I use a small stand to sit it on, about the height of a chair just to the left of me.
Everyone's ears are different, pickups make a difference as does the position of the amp, as does the type of guitar, hand position ect.
I use a Mullen G2, Telonics 206 pickup, Goodrich volume pedal. Small amount of delay and very small to no reverb.I actually prefer to use delay only like Sarah Jory. There is a seminar on youtube where she explains what she does.

I hope this helps, your mileage may vary. Just remember, that what works for me, may not work for anyone else.
The knobs on the amp are designed to be turned. I does not matter how odd they look as long as you get the sound you are looking for. _________________ Just north of the Weird place, south of Georgetown |

Jon,
Those amps are very different. Changing the speaker won’t make your peavey sound like a milkman.
Taking the mids out in your 112 will only increase the piercing sound problem. Try turning them up instead. _________________ Bob |

Wow, thanks Roy introducing me to Sarah Jory-holy smokes!
Anyways I'll try settings and maybe the PF-350. Man I do love that Milkman though.
Thanks. |

I replaced the speaker in my 112 and put in a Black Widow.
Got more punch and a little better sound. Increased the weight of the amp around 10 pounds. |

What Bob Hoffnar said is likely to be your issue. Id try experimenting with the EQ before swapping speakers. Some guitars have a lot more mid range inherently and need to be dialed back. However on other guitars it's completely the opposite and the mids need to be boosted. Be wary of settings for amps you find online even from your favorite players. Someone else's settings are based on a particular rig and may not suit your needs. Your guitar, pickups, cables, volume pedal, speaker, and everything else you use will determine what you hear and therefore effect how you EQ your amp. I have always loved the sound of the original Blue Marvel speakers that come in the Nashville 112 but I currently use a Telonics neo speaker in mine. It sounds fantastic. I tried the PF-350 in the 112 and thought that it did not sound nearly as good as the blue marvel or the Telonics in that amp. It did however sound perfect with my Quilter rack. |

I put a TT12 in my N112, and put the blue marvel back in. I prefer the original to the TT12 in THAT amp, and really like having the TT12 in an extension speaker to use with other amps (various tube amps and a Walker SS). Don't know if it will help, but I run the N112 with the knobs pretty much straight up and the presence way down on my Bud with a 705, and the bass down some on my PP's with TT's. Takes a while to get your sound the way YOU want it..I'm sure that over the years I dialed right through what I'm using now, just didn't recognize it! Some things just take time! |

So in learning what I can about it,
I'm guessing by a couple of posts that the stock 112 speaker is called a Blue Marvel?
Looking at mine, it is all black, no labels on the face but a tiny sticker on the edge of the magnet that says "Made by Eminence" and 4 ohm.
BTW I bought it from Billy Cooper a couple months ago (& play a GFI expo D10).
Thanks! |
