My Emmons D-10 came with a five-way switch. The seller said very early Emmons guitars had five-way switches for the stereo effect, and Emmons continued to use them until they were gone.
I talked to a repairman and he said he never saw a five-way before the mid-70s -- pickers bought them for their Stratocasters. I never saw one before then either. Does anyone here have an original 60s Emmons with such a switch? The tone pot in my guitar is from the 80s, so the controls might not be original.
Thanks! |

Could that be the switch for the Pentad pickups? |

Hi,Tom. The 66/67 Bolt-on that I had restored last year had a 5-way switch in it with a Pentad pickup. The switch and Pentad only worked the top neck, the bottom neck was stock single coil. The 5-way switch couldn't have been original in my opinion, it looked so bad...the hole in the switchplate was too big, so there was a big gap between the edge of the switch and the edge of the switchplate. It looked homemade. I had Mike Cass take out the 5-way switch and the Pentad pickup and restore it to original. You could ask Mike, I'm pretty sure he said it was modified after the original issue.

Pat! My old friend, how's the Tele?
Yeah, I have some serious health issues, and all of my medical stuff is there, including the heart doctor. Lay off the tater chips and greasy food, or your blood pressure will be in four figures, same as mine... -L- Plus it's always good to be with my wife.
Give me a holler offline... I'd love to catch up.

Tom, the 5way isnt original.
The early Emmons Stereo guitars used a 3way toggle switch mounted in the back face of the E9 neck for neck selection,in addition to 2 more on either side of it;one for tone control defeat and one for mono/stereo selection. No room for a 5way there. Accordingly, most stereo guitars had no tone circuit cut-out between the necks, however guitars with the cut-out/panel etc would still use the 3way switch. |

I have an old Emmons catalog and under "Options" it states:
"Pentad pickups, wired with 5 way rotary switch, installed at time of purchase. (per neck) $132.00"
I have a picture of the switch and it's a round, black knob with a chrome center. The pentad pickup looks like a humbucker type.

yes, in the 80's the Pentad was offered w/5way switch. My post referred to 60's guitars like Tom stated he's in possession of. No 5way for those, trust me. The Pentad came along much later. |
