I'v talked with a few guys thinking of changing to possibly keep old keys from slipping. Do they have any that looks like the old Klusons that work real good?? Or what have you guys used and how do they perform. Just your opinion. Thanks!!

Gary, (Gotoh)I hope I spelled that right ,but I don't think I did.Anyway they make a tuning key that looks just like the old Klusons, mounts on the guitar the same way the only way I think you could tell a difference is the gear ratio is much better, and there is no loose play in the key like the Kulsons. Maybe someone will help out here and tell us where you can find them.

Please, please, do not put replacement tuners that are not kluson type, IMHO this would devalue the instrument. (But then I'm a bit of a stickler when it comes to originality.) The type that use a sleeve or bushing through the headstock material will diminish some of the classic PP tone. The klusons slip a little, but they have a definite sound that is worth the extra effort.

Stewmac.com has just about anything you might need for a guitar including the Gotoh Kluson copies with a better gear ratio.

Mike Cass put the Gotoh's on my 75PP and I am very happy with them.

Kluson tuners are now being made again.
WD is distributing them. They actually say
"Kluson" right on them!
Check 'em out

For the 60's and 70's push-pull guitars, what was the original Kluson button shape? Oval or scalloped?

The buttons on my '81 pp are black butter beans.

Stew Mac has the best price I've found. I ordered four sets a few days ago. Cost was $25.86 each, or $103.44 for four plus $11.25 SH. I'll be happy to make the 2 X 2 spare tuners available at cost if someone wants to get just 3 sets.

I am going to be so thrilled to get rid of these clunky notchy Kluson things. I could remove them, sonicate them in carbon tet and restore them to their prehistoric elegance, but why bother. I have never in all my born days seen such crappy tuners! If I ever sell the guitar I'll include the junk with it for "originality".

I asked the Kluson Deluxe tuner Q back on 9/5/05. I wasn't the first and I've seen at least 3 similar queries since. Anybody up for a pedal steel FAQ?

Charlie

edited to add that Stew-Mac's part number is 0933. See it at http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Tuners/Guitar,_solid_peghead/1/Gotoh_Vintage-style_Oval_Knob_Tuners.html

Steve is right when it comes to the GOTOH's.They are good tuners.Nothing wrong with them and you hardly can tell the difference.
And a decrease in value?Maybe.

It just depends on what you want to spend and if you want to keep the instrument original. And are you not changing originality when you change Klusons for Klusons?

To clarify: Changing tuners to anything but Kluson TYPE,(not necessarily Kluson per se: Gotoh repros are great..) will affect the sound of the horn in my opinion. The string shaft which passes through a bushing sounds different than the non bushing type. If you don't hear a difference the point is moot.

John,
You don't use the bushings. They fit into the same hole as the ones that came on the Emmons. I've replaced several p/p's with the tuners from Stew Mac. Change the note? Not!
