She spanned many generations of being the best. An example for all those who would follow. Rest in Peace, dear lady.

Maybe not, but very many of them wanted to sound like her.

To me, Aretha has pretty much defined soul music for more than 50 years. I can hear just one note and instantly recognize her signature. She will always be one of the very finest singers to have inhabited planet earth, regardless of style. RIP, Aretha.

Interesting that the Queen of Soul and the King (Elvis) died on the same date.

I just love this clip of young Aretha in 1964. You can tell she's excited about life, music, and she's just getting started on a long wild journey to conquer the world. RIP Aretha.

Very sad news. My favorite music has always been Motown. We have lost one of best there will ever be. I'm glad I got to see her in the early 70's.

There's been a lot of talk about her 'soul' with, I accept, some justification. Her music was so expressive and emotional.

For me, though, it was about her 'chops' - seemingly no cadence of perfectly executed notes was beyond her. She made my jaw drop. She was, arguably, the most accomplished popular singer ever.

Jim,
That was great!
Her biggest selling album was a gospel album.
She would join in with her dad in opening services at her dad's church as a young girl. Very Happy

Find out what it means to me

We that grew up with her, know what she means to us!

And at a time when we knew where music was taking us.

The choir of angels now have the greatest voice of all time to lead, praise and join in to sing before Jesus. I wanted to share this photo because it shows just how soulful Aretha was without uttering a word. To say I was humbled to be in her presence would be an understatement.

This hit me harder than other celebrity deaths. It felt like a piece of America died. I've always felt that she was the ultimate American singer. No pretense - all from the heart. All the musical talent God could muster in one person, bringing it down to Earth for us to hear, reflecting the culture I grew up in. She's gone, but the spirit is still here. God bless her.
