Have any of you ever increased the string spacing at the changer end by moving the side mounts that the cam shaft goes through over just a little bit and then adding shims in between the cams to move the strings a little farther apart.
I know that doing this is also dependant on the movement of the tuning nuts on the side of the guitar. That may or may not be an issue depending on the guitar and the opening in the side plate.
If so then what material might work best in between the cams, ie. nylon/teflon washers, polished bronze or oilite type washers or whtat other kinds of washers.
Thanks for the thoughts.

Metal or plastic washers would be fine, and I suppose it could be done...if there were a large enough hole in the endplate for the tuners to line up, and the axle had a center support, and the bridge blocks could be moved easily, and the axle were long enough to have full seating in the bridge blocks, and the pickups had enough output to pick up the outer strings (which may have shifted 1/8" or more). In short, all these things must be taken into account, and each guitar would be a little different.
Yes, it could be done, but it would be much more complex than just adding some washers. |

I'd think a few washers would have very little effect on tone. Their mass would be rather insignificant (compared to the rest of the changer), and the loadings are mostly longitudinal, not sideways. |

I think that the most critical issue would be the pickup. The regfular size pick up's magnets would not line up and would definitely affect tone. This could be overcome however, by having trutone make a custom pickup according to your new specifications. My basic question is why would you want to have wider spaces between the strings? |

Width spacing at the pickup end is more noticeable when more larger gage strings are added-and especially on my 14 string unit which uses a 120 ga E string on the very, very bottom. EXCEL has done a magnificent job on the Superb model units with a wider string spacing to accomodate this requirement. The new changer on these models is something to behold. Mitsuo has done a great job in his engineering in this area.
Worth a checkout in any event. Not a "copy" of any other changer on the market and has more raise and lower capabilities than all the other ones also.
