Looking back over some of my Lap Steel Methods books, I came across this book by
DeWitt Scott, "Scotty". I had visited his business in St. Louis on one occasion and talked
with employees at his store frequently, even purchased at least one lap steel from him.
I enjoyed talking with him and other store employees, and purchasing items from his store.
I always admired his lap steel playing and also his pedal steel playing. Certainly miss him now.

Here is a book by Scotty that I purchased and enjoy. It is not a complicated presentation,
but has some interesting information on playing lap steel.

These pages show the CD Contents and Table of Contents for what is contained
in the book. Songs are in note and tab. The CD and book contains many old favorites.

Do others have the book, and what do you think of it?

It was my first introduction to steel guitar for me. I used it with an old Teisco six-string in C6.

It's a very decent introduction to C6 and general lap steel, and there aren't a lot of comparable competing products from the bigger music instruction publishers. It covers basic music theory, scales and chords, and has tunes in C, F and G I think. It also covers some important basics of technique. The longer arrangements are pretty good. Overall I think it works well for anyone who tends to do well with self-study on new musical instruments. It's gets you to a place where you can start exploring on your own, by ear, or move on to more advanced materials.

I have it too. Good basic arrangements for beginning players. As Brad says, I like that it also covers technique such as blocking exercises.

I don't have the Scotty stories like you, but I do recall the time I called to order strings and Scotty himself answered and helped me get the right gauges. Nice man. I also met him at a convention and we talked briefly about his long scale frypan which he had with him. It's the same one on the cover of the book and I got to hear him play it on the stage.

If memory serves, he saw it hanging on some proprietor's wall as decor and made him an offer. If anyone can confirm. It is a VERY early one with the script logo and super thick horseshoe.

I only saw Scotty play once but I recall being floored at how loose and relaxed he was as he played Panhandle Rag on his frypan. I was inspired!

"This song is in the key of dog " .... and off he went.

Yeah, the keys are Dog, Charlie, George, Albert, etc. That's because when you say "C" to your bandmates on stage... C sounds a lot like D or E or G or B. It's pretty embarrassing when band members start a song in different keys!
