I play 8-string non-pedal and dobro. I have thought about trying my hand at pedal steel. There is one for sale in my area and was curious what you guys think about 73 era Sho-Bud professionals. The one for sale is a double that has been converted to a single neck with a pad. 3 and 4, asking $1400 for it. Thoughts?

I played a double neck 8 string National for almost a year while I had MSA build my new D10. I say, go for pedals! They are great - a lot more fun and you can do a lot more with them. If I ever get good at this, I may dig my non-pedal out from under the bed for retro stuff but that will be a while. As far as a Bud goes: Nothing (to me) sounds better than an old Sho-Bud, but you might have to find a good tech to bring it to playable status depending on what shape it's in.

1400 for an SD-10 is fine. Not a screaming deal, not a ripoff.
When clean and not gunked up with nicotine deposits, it'll be trouble free.
And they're pretty easy to work on if you end up having to.

If you are just starting, and don’t know how to set up or work on pedal steel, I’d suggest go with a new Encore, it is a pro steel, brand new and trouble free for couple hundred bucks more... IMHO

Thanks for the input, guys. I may hold off for a bit until I have more time to invest in learning to play with the pedals.
