Classics with Steel and Dobro.

Indeed, on The Blue Ridge Rangers Rides Again, Fogerty surrounds himself with such top-flight musicians as Buddy Miller (guitar), Greg Leisz (pedal and lap steel, mandolin and dobro), Jason Mowery (fiddle, mandolin and dobro) and Kenny Aronoff (drums). They circle and entwine each other in joyous musical call and responses (complete with hooting and hollering), weaving in and out of each song. Call it a country record if you must, but it's really the sound of America. And the sound of Fogerty: real instruments, real talent. No artifice. |

I have the Blue Ridge Rangers Rides Again.
One of my favorite songs on the cd is Moody River.

I would love to see some Steel with JF, but I really just want all the hits!

Ya Know... For being a one chord song (Dm), Run Through The Jungle has 3 specific, cool, fun to play guitar licks, that he uses for the intro, verse, chorus.
If you watch the vids from the 60's, people were going pretty nuts over his 1-3 chord Swamp grooves.

I take these occasional "Songs" classes from a really good guitar teacher (and stellar player) here in Sonoma County. There's usually about 10 people in the class and they run for six weeks.
I bring an acoustic and sometimes i will also bring a dobro.
What happens is that we learn six songs, get the chord charts and sometimes sheet music, break down every aspect of the song. Learn the solos, etc.
One of the songs a couple sessions back was "Proud Mary." Until we dissected everything about the song in the class, I never really appreciated that such a seemingly simple song has many complexities. It really took me some work to get the strumming pattern down like Fogerty.
John has always been very modest about his guitar playing. But he did a great job on that number in what - 1969? Singing the lead and creating a great feel with his guitar playing on it - it gave me a whole new appreciation for an old classic.

Ever hear Fogerty's version of Jambalaya? He recorded that tune under the Blue Ridge Rangers band name in the early 1970s and I think he played steel on it.

Haven't heard it in a long time, but if I don't feel like going out to my garage after work to find it on the shelving unit holding many boxes filled with vinyl LPs, I'm sure it's avaialble on YouTube. I'll give it a listen this evening.
And as I recall, Fogerty played all the instruments on the original Blue Ridge Rangers album.

I played tis song in a band with a guitar player, who was very good at emulating him. He tuned his guitar down a whole step to play the song in D (we played in C). Did you do this also?

Very true.
Also, John Fogerty recorded one of my favorite guitar solos.
It's in CCR's cover of Heard It Through The Grapevine on Cosmo's Factory.
I love it.

Now I've ordered the original Blue Ridge Rangers from Amazon. Can't wait for it to show up.
