In my quest for restoring my old Sho-Bud, I am finding that there is a major stumbling block. Water based decals seem to no longer exist. some people have even given up refinishing cabinets because of the difficulty in finding them. In this high tech world that we live in , can it be that difficult to re make these things? If you think I am kidding about how hard these are to find, then try to find a water based decal for a LDG model guitar, you'll have better luck trying to find a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow |

Hi Jack...not sure this will help, probably a dumb idea of mine. But this site has a way (if you have a picture the right scale size of what you want)to make a water-slide decal at home on your printer. I have no idea how good they turn out. Just an idea. Good luck in your quest! http://www.bare-metal.com/decals/decal_paper.html

If I'm not mistaken you can get slide off decal paper to print with your computer.
Hitch would be getting the artwork, but somthing must be available that you can scan in. |

The major problem with doing it yourself on your home computer - apart from getting a good scan - is that most LDG decals are white for dark guitars. Bubble jet or laser printers do not print white, they simply use the paper color to get the white. Black home-made decals would be less of a problem.
To my knowledge - and I'd love to be wrong - neither Bobbe Seymour nor Duane Marrs have any white LDG water slide decals.
If anybody out there has these decals and is willing to sell, please let us know. I want one, too.

There was a time when the companies that made these water type decals would have a minumum order that was in the hundreds. I have talked to guitar makers that had this problem. Made it unfeasible.
Maybe things are different now with the computer based print places. |

The peal and stick decals leaves a lot to be desired as far as the finish product is concerned. No matter how many coats of lacquer you apply, the edges of the decal will show and can be felt. If someone could come up with the thin water release decals, both black and white for Sho-Buds, they would surely be my hero.

How many $'s would an order actually cost?
Could several of us contribute to an order, thereby, not costing any one person an arm and a leg? I'm willing to participate. |

These folks may have something that you could make work.

I'm thinking about attempting a little experimenting myself.

In the old days I screenprinted the decals that you are talking about, in colors and also the gold, with black outlines.
I printed these decals on paper that could
be put into water and the image would slide
off onto the guitar.
Recently I was asked to make more, I contacted old suppliers and was told that the paper was no longer available and that the inks were no longer being made.
But SOMEBODY is still making these things since Fender and other manufacturers are still using them.
I talked with a friend that digitally prints on clear vinyl and he said that the colors are transparent, so they aren't good enough.
If somebody could steer me to the materials I would be happy to start making decals again.

Model railroaders do custom decals all the time and most often in white - check with your local serious MR store and see if you can strike a trail somewhere. |

I have a screenprinting & digital shop, and
I know that waterslide decal paper is still available. Bel decal in Fl sells it and also does custom decals, but as pointed out in a previous post the min. qty is large, making it not cost affective.
However the old ALPS/MD printers are ribbon printers and can print white , gold whatever on WS decal paper.
If you find a print shop that has one of these
printers they can print your decals in short runs at a modest price.
I have an ALPs but havent used it for years-
I'll see if it still works- and if I still have white ribbons.. |

Put me down for a couple "Sho-Bud Nvl TN" and "The Professional" waterbornes too.
I too have been thinking of the Model RR people but haven't had time to pursue it.

Jack, we have found a company that can produce the water release decals in both black and white. Fortunately, I have some peal and stick decals for them to use as samples. If everything works out okay, I'll refinish your LDG for you. Hopefully we can get it looking like the one below.
