Mine comes and goes. There are days I wake up with grandiose plans to work out new arrangements, even write a new TAB program , but 5 min in , its "I'm done" No energy. I would rather do nothing !
Not a lack of interest but rather not today, probably not even tomorrow.
I play 3 or 4 gigs each month which are fun and I do prep before the gigs.
It's not like I do nothing all day, retired 3 years now with a full plate of stuff, maybe too much stuff.
Or maybe I need Geritol _________________ Emmons L-II , Fender Telecasters, B-Benders , Eastman Mandolin ,

Tony, I understand.
I find I can still go out and thrash on something - spend the whole day mowing, cutting brush, whatever. Or I can still stay out till 2 AM. The problem is that 30 years ago, a few hours of sleep and I was good to go again. Now after one of those days, or nights, I'm worthless for about 2 days afterward! I seem to have to recover both my body, and my ambition too! _________________ Many play better than I do. Nobody has more fun. |

Does that stuff still exist? My wife and I were wondering just last night.
I've always got a bunch of things lined up I really want to do, wish I'd had the freedom to do them when I was young and had more energy and stamina. As it is, I need about three times as much time as there is in a day.
But about half of that is because I finally learned there's no point in doing something "quick and dirty", and I am willing to take whatever time it requires to get it right. I'm really glad I don't charge me for my work.

By the way Tony - I'm not a psychologist but I HAVE figured out something that might help. The "too much stuff on the plate" is the story of my life, and just knowing all you have lined up sometimes can de-motivate you.
We're sometimes told "don't look back", but my wife convinced me that sometimes that's a GOOD thing. I see that I DID fix that problem with the truck, we DID have relatives here for a week, we DID help her sister recover from flood damage..... having a to-do list is good, use a highlighter to cross stuff off. But maybe make a small folder to keep a couple of the old ones in so you can look back at how far you have actually come. Seeing some of the things which are now behind you can give you a boost to keep going.
Feel free to ignore this advice, we're all different and what works for one does not necessarily work for another. But that's my 2 cents' worth. _________________ Many play better than I do. Nobody has more fun. |

It's still available. I was surprised to see it on the shelf at the pharmacy recently. |

Tony, what you need is this.....
The name was short for Happy Day Company, with an L for LeBlanc. However, many years later when someone asked how he named the drug, LeBlanc said "Well, I hadda call it something." Hadacol was a mixture of vitamins B1 and B2, iron, niacin, calcium, phosphorous, honey, and diluted hydrochloric acid in 12% alcohol.

It's a cliché, but now I'm retired I wonder how I ever found time to go to work.
My remedy for the long to-do list and the variable energy (I usually have plenty, but sometimes not) is to tell myself every morning that today, if I don't want to do a single thing, no-one can make me. Everything after that is a bonus. _________________ Make sleeping dogs tell the truth!

Since I started on the CPAP machine (two months ago) my energy level first thing in the morning is considerably higher than it used to be.
It doesn't always work - every so-often I'll sleep poorly despite the new therapy and it's a timely reminder of how lacklustre I used to feel every morning.
Like the insulin-pump (four years now and counting) the CPAP therapy was something I fiercely resisted. Now I don't know how I managed without them. (This is NOT an advert for Medicare, by the way.)
I have a show coming up for the month of September and I'm sitting at the steel doing exercises every day. Once upon I time couldn't have found the energy. _________________ Roger Rettig: Emmons D10, B-bender Teles, Martins, and a Gibson Super 400!

For comparison, here are the ingredients in Geritol:
Ingredients: Invert Sugar, Purified Water, Alcohol 12%, Brewers Yeast, Ferric Ammonium Citrate, Caramel Color, Choline Bitartrate, Niacinamide, Citric Acid, dl-Methionine, Thiamine HCl, Riboflavin, d-Panthenol, Flavors, Benzoic Acid, Sodium Hydroxide, Pyridoxine HCl.
Buried in the fancy names is iron, niacin, and vitamin B6.
That last item can be obtained by lowering the E's to D# on the E9 tuning. |

The thing that gave me back my energy and feeling my best was Prostrate surgery, Had to get up 3 or 4 times a night, Did not get any deep Rem sleep. Since the surgery, I sleep 7 to 8 hours not a stir. Gave me a different out look on life. |

nice stuff above !
Well I don't take Geritol, I did have Prostate Surgery last year and I'm not at a loss of sleep.
But I do have several projects which are in process . I don't spend all my time being busy, sometimes I just do nuthin, if I don't finish doin' nuthin' today I'll finish tomorrow.
I'm an early riser, always have been due to pre retirement sales road " work" schedule. Hit the road early, start the day before everyone wakes up and I was home before anyone even thinks of leaving work for the day.
Music is very important, but so are my other projects. My mind is probably going to fast and wearing me out !
Don't worry, I practice a lot, but sometimes my music desires may be placed ahead of other things which I want to do ,or make that, need to be completed.
Retirement is hard work ! I should probably plan some vacation days from retirement ! _________________ Emmons L-II , Fender Telecasters, B-Benders , Eastman Mandolin ,

Well that's the whole problem right there, Tony! Since you took up this "retirement" gig, you've been at it 3 years and no time off! You don't get weekends from retirement, you don't get holidays off, you don't get 3 weeks vacation. You don't even get to knock off a little early! It's just a constant! That's enough to wear anybody down! _________________ Many play better than I do. Nobody has more fun. |

Hadacol, Geritol, alcohol for people who don't drink.
Tony Prior wrote: |

Seriously, that could be the case. The brain requires a disproportionate amount of blood/oxygen. Thinking uses energy; worry and perseveration sap energy.
(What? Spellcheck doesn't like 'perseveration?' So I googled it and found a deeper definition:
Quote: |
... a failuresof a higher level executive control system to modulate aslower level response selection system under a requirements for novel response generation.
This model suggests that perseveration is the consequence of a failure of frontal specification of striatal outputs during controlled processing,
resulting in the continued reselection of previously activated outputs.
Schizophrenia Bulletin, 23(l):63-74, 1997. )

See what I mean? All that thinking makes you tired!
But I do like DR Browns observations. He clearly thinks that laughter is the best medicine. |

If I remember right, Hadacol used to go around and put on stage shows, it was called the Hadacol Caravan.
I recall seeing a picture of Hank Williams performing on one of the shows.

I've been retired since 2011 and its been a little more hectic than before I hung up my tool belt. I wound up having a second heart attack, my wife was extremely sick for a year and a half and we're still recovering from all of that. I've been extremely lucky with the fact, that, I've been playing music rather steadily, close to forty gigs this year and still counting. The last couple of years we've done over fifty gigs per year. My wife plays in the band now, which, is really great! However, after saying all that, I've realized that my energy isn't what it used to be. It takes longer to recover after playing a gig even though I love to play so much. It's becoming mentally and physically draining, to a point. I wish we had roadies again. Maybe being close to seventy and having the physical ailments have something to do with it. Also, another problem plaguing me is that, almost every night when I try to sleep, music is running through my brain. It's so bad, I can't sleep. I've gotten up and played the steel, acoustic and my Tele to no avail. I wind up staying up later than I want because minutes turn into hours. So, my energy has not been very high at all. I take a lot of medications because of my heart attacks and see my doctor every six months. So far I'm on a straight track medically, but, the energy is just not there anymore. I have good days physically and I have blah days. I'm learning to live with both.
All in all, I love being retired with no more unreal job expectations. And, I love being my own boss giving myself orders of what and what not to do for the day. Plus, I always give myself 100% on my evaluations. So, that part is a win, win situation. |

I rise early and get after it. Tired by early afternoon and need a nap by 2pm. Takes me 2 days to do 1 days work and like some of you, 2 days to recover. Retired since 2009 and I hit 69 this year. Got a gig Saturday night and I rest up in the afternoon so I can stay awake. I just accept what I got and do the best I can. |

I'm 75 and up until about 4 years ago I felt great,
had a lot of energy and was cruising through life.
Then I got sick. Really ickypoo sick.
I now feel pretty good but my energy is pretty much a memory.
I can putter all day slowly. I am no longer a fast putterer.
Heavy lifting and ladders are but mere memories.
My activities consist of puttering, mowing the lawn and trying to make music.
I'm best at mowing the lawn.
I feel good but don't ask me to hurry at anything.
I also cannot take naps. I just end up staring at the ceiling.
Maybe I need a new hobby, like drinking. That might help with napping. _________________ I have stuff.
I try to make music with it.
Sometimes it works.
Sometimes it doesn't.
But I keep on trying. |
