Hey Gang,

I've been considering picking up and Asher Hawaiian Jr and I'm wondering what your experience has been. Also I'd interested in your thoughts on the stock pick ups vs. the Lollar upgrades.

Thanks so much,

Ian

I have one with the stock pickups. I like everything about it except for the pickups -- I find them uninspiring ... Can't speak for the Lollars, but I have a set of EMGs I'm planning to put in that will definitely make an improvement.

As always, YMMV ...

I like mine a lot. Great hunk of wood, nice hardware, especially the bridge. Plays great.
Pickups are so-so. Lots of output but the tone is... meh. I think there may be an Alumitone in my future.

I like mine.
Could have had a better nut and the pickups are ok. Not great but adequate.
Heck, it was $575. I can't get a Clinesmith for that amount.
It's well built and sounds good.
It's been very serviceable for my needs.

I got a Lollar pickup for my Gold Tone 6 string. What a difference. Similarly, I always liked the guitar, and with the new pickup, it’s great.

I agree with what David Venzke said. Not quite the pop I was looking for. I finally replaced the pu’s with Harmonic Design Z-90 pu’s. Now I really love the guitar.

Not sure if Asher may have made a change with the bridge, but I had several of the older ones and they were shipped with radiused bridges (curved top to match the fingerboard on a standard six string). Affected chordal playing higher on the neck, not single notes. And they do benefit from a pickup retrofit, these are great platforms for a P-90 (in a humbucker shell) design.

Hey gang,

So I took the plunge and picked one up. Thanks so much to Forum member Gary Pierce who made the transaction nearly effortless. And Bob Russel, you are absolutely right, it is a "great hunk of wood." The general consensus is correct: the pick ups are nothing special; I'll probably get the Lollar Imperial Humbuckers down the road. The bridge does have a slight radius but so far it's a non issue. It sounds great tuned to open D (I may even tune my dobro back to G). Thanks to one and all for your feedback.

Congrats, Ian. It's a fine lap steel and I think you'll enjoy it. Someone earlier had mentioned that some of the EH Jrs had come with radiused bridges. Mine has the newer Hipshot lock-down bridge that is not radiused, which is much better for steel playing. Hopefully yours does too. It's a well-made instrument at a price reasonable enough that a pickup upgrade is not unthinkable. Happy playing!
