Topic: 8-string A6th, with B-on-Top |

I am trying out the A6th Tuning with B-on-Top on the 8-string Ric JB Model I bought from the Ray Montee collection.
It is just like having a D-on-Top of a C6th tuning.
It opens up some nice single note pockets that I am used to from PSG. I specifically use it on Bogg's Boogie and some other tunes I do, so it's nice to have for my style of 6th playing.
I don't miss the low F# at all (but what do I know)

| Pete, I haven't tried B on top, but I use G instead of F# on the bottom and find that to be very useful in getting a nice 7th chord on the bottom. |

I was just thinking (regarding G on bottom) today that you hear about A6 a lot and the C13 (C6 with a low Bb), but rarely A13, or at least they don't call it A13 much...seems like it would be a really versatile A6 type tuning for 8 strings...the advantages of A6 (fifth up top) with the lowest string giving you a seventh option.

Pete,
On my 8-string C9 tuning, I have C6 (low-to-hi........C-E-G-A-C-E...as my middle 6 strings. I then have the b7, Bb, on the bottom.....and the 9th, D, on the top.
I just started using a version of C9 on my 6-string...lo-to-hi...C-E-G-Bb-C-D.

I'll stick to E on top on my A6 tuning.
I don't like re-entrant tunings, but I also am not a pedal steeler. |

Yes, but that first string should be E in my mind. Like I said, I don't like re-entrant tunings.
It's my failing, I know pedal steel players use those upper strings even if re-entrant, but that's no more for me than a 10 string neck.
I like my tunings straightforward and for 6 or 8 strings.
The A6 variant I really have been liking is the Billy Hew Len Ag w/ G and Bb on the bottom strings.

I don't have any string/note rules in my mind regarding the way things have to be, so I'm making them the way they should be for me to be able to play as fluently as possible.
I had that string tuned to High-A also, which is nice for some songs and licks.
It is quite a stretch for one string gauge though. |

| I play my A6 with an E instead of an F# on the lowest string. It allows me to play thumping bass lines like Luther Perkins did playing with Johnny Cash. It works great for songs like "Folsom Prison Blues." You can play the whole solo easily in A6 too. |

I never understood how you pedal steel guys can play those re-entrant tunings.

Oh Man I just can't tell you how often that note "Solves the equation" for me, so to speak.
In my world, you need at least one note above the E in the 8-string A6th tuning string positions.
Viva la Differance'!
It is the same interval that MANY Pro D10 Players switched to on their C6th necks in order to open up the tuning for ease of single note soloing, etc, (C6th with D on top).
fwiw, Because I mainly play with Bass players when I play, i don't have a strong concern for the low notes, as they mainly are covered by the Bass player.
David can you post a vid showing some of your playing on your chosen tuning?
