| We will be flying to Dallas from Florida. Just wondering if Jerry can carry his bar and picks in his pocket or in a carry on bag. |

I've been hassled for the tone bar a few times, but after explaining what it's for, they let me through. Put it in checked luggage if you can.

| TSA at MSP once confiscated one of my bars. At other times, they let me skate right through. Depends on the screener's attitude and/or the time of the month. If you want to board the plane, they get your bar if they really want it. My advice: Travel with your least favorite bar and be prepared to lose it. |

| Jerry uses the zirconium bar. Wonder if that would make a difference since it’s not metal. |

| I flew home from the convention in St. Louis one year with a carry-on full of new strings, a tone bar, a tuner, and picks. I thought I'd rather have it with me so I could explain what everything was instead of sending it through checked baggage and just having someone remove it. It certainly got their attention going through the scanner - I can see why when the TSA agent saw a bunch of coiled wires, a metal bar, and the tuner which for all they knew might be some sort of radio-controlled device. Bottom line I was asked some routine questions (and showed them my convention program!) and allowed to fly with everything. |

I always put the bar in my checked luggage but always carry my picks with me on the plane. I figure I can always borrow somebody else's bar, if my bag gets lost, but I can't borrow anyone else's picks. This way I avoid having to explain what the bar is for and any chance of it being confiscated.

Like everybody, I've got favorite bars and picks. But I can play with just about anything if I have to. There will be tons of great bars and picks at the show, I'm sure. How long does it take to bend a set of pics to suit?

| Have had my carry-on manually checked a couple of times when entering the US, because they couldn't make out what the "hole" (invisible object) that showed up on their scanners was. Turned out it was my zirconium bar. Have had no problems explaining that the content in the pouch was "picks and slide for Hawaiian style guitar playing". |

I always put them in my checked bag as I have been hassled just about everytime I have them in my carry on !! Something about the shape makes them think it's a .50 API round hehe ....

| My only concern with putting "questionable" items in checked baggage is that they might be removed (never to be seen again!) at the discretion of inspectors and you're not there to plead your case - or worse, your bag is left behind. Have any Forumites ever experienced missing steel accessories when they arrived at their destination? |

| It does take a while to bend picks the way you want them. Austin has 2 zirconium bars and he is coming to Dallas so I think Jerry is just going to use one of his. Sure would hate to loos the zirconium bar cause they are very hard to come by. Will chance bringing his picks. |

| This works...Take a steel player CD photo in your carry on....John Hughey has a great shot with a bar....Picks in pocket, bar in bag, and proof of what it is...A picture is worth a thousand flights |

| Good idea. We made it thru. Jerry took his picks in his pocket. Left his zirconium bar at home. Sure don’t want to loose it. Austin has 2 so he is bringing both of his. |

The TSA can be interesting. I always find it odd to have a carryon bag full of vintage microphones, power supplies etc and not have them look at them, but ask me about the steel bar.
A few years ago I was at a recording summit in Nashville and won one of the door prizes, a pair of condenser mics built into empty shotgun shell cases (mic element in the firing end and an xlr connector in the casing). I put them in a pocket in my laptop bag and forgot all about them. They were in there for a couple of years and must have gone through TSA many, many times with them and never got flagged. Go figure...

TSA should have no problem with a bar made out of unobtainium, but they're virtually impossible to get these days.
