Years ago, Peewee Charles did a demonstration of the IVL Pitchrider of him playing a very credible saxophone sound on Steel, using MIDI plus a mouth tube, I believe, to add the wind phrasing to the sound. I was very impressed at the time. But I'm not aware of any single effect box that you can just plug into and get a credible sax sound. _________________ www.JimCohen.com

I would think you would need a midi pickup on your steel and a tone generator for the sound . I use a Casio Midi lead guitar and the sax sounds very good . |

Years ago Korg had a synth box that did pretty well on horn type effects. It did not require a MIDI pickup/setup.
I have read about this but have not had an opportunity to give it a try:

You can use a Sonuus G2M midi converter. It uses your regular pickup and then you use any midi sound generator and it sounds amazing. It’s monophonic ( one note at a time ) but the tracking I guess is teally good. Check out the youtube videos on it. There’s a video of Robert Randolf at NAAM trying one on a lap steel. |

I played with a guitar player that had a floor unit that did synth sounds (strings, horns, organ, etc...) fairly decently. I think it was made by Roland. I would think that similar units are still available. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . I ued to play saz and have tried all sorts of effects, synths etc.
The only ones that work decently IMO are ones that use a specific synth pickup, either MIDI or the old hex system, with an outboard synth module. I have a Fender/Roland Strat with an outboard synth that I use to play sax lines and it sound *exactly* like a sax.
The kicker is that once you find a unit you need to understand sax phrasing, which is very tricky on a string instrument. If you play it like a steel guitar it'll sound like a steel guitar with a fuzzbox attached. _________________ No chops, but great tone

Jim, any chance you could post a clip to demonstrate that? _________________ www.JimCohen.com
