If you use Google you'll get a bunch of sources. TubeDepot, TheTubeStore, KCA. Lord Valve and on and on...

eBay has quite a number of listings for both new and NOS. Also, Rick at Viva Tubes has never failed me. Contact him at:

Be VERY careful about buying tubes from eBay sellers. Very, very few use tube testers that supply enough voltage to determine suitability for guitar amp use, and many "NOS" tubes are good looking "pulls" tested on their low-voltage systems.

Buy tubes from reputable sources.

I use Tube Depot. They have a good selection and a comparison tool that makes sense.

Tube Depot also has a warranty -- 90 day for new tubes -- that is a good fall back against receiving a noisy, microphonic tube. Other dealers may, as well, but it is TD with which I am familiar. It also means that (presumably) they do indeed test the tubes as they say.

I don't know that I've ever seen Brad suggest much benefit from using NOS tubes in a BB.

Except he's not shopping for a 12AX7 - he's hunting for a source for a 12AU7. Same pinout but a much lower gain tube.

If a circuit is designed for a 12AU7 there's usually a reason for it, and a 12AX7 will usually have far too much gain.

I have a first generation old Black Box and have replaced the 12Au7 with different brands over the years.I have found this one to sound the best for my taste. Its been reliable so far and not microphonic like I had with the JJ's with warm nice tube sound.Had good luck with the electro harmonix as well but I prefer the sound of this one now! Plenty to choose from though.

Hoping Brad Sarno will pipe in here on his recommendations.
Also, wondering what are symptoms of a bad tube in a Black Box: does it just crap out, or are there warning signs of degradation?

Going down the list shows the gain of each tube manufacture. The lowest is 1 { lower than the AU7 }. You can pick the gain and curves you want.
