Do you tend to play around a few frets, or run the whole neck? And, is it a comfort thing or tonal preference?

All over the neck. As I tend to play swing and pedal steel tunes I rely on a lot of bar twisting. I rely on what the song dictates.

Steel guitar sound can be fatiguing if it stays in one range. Spread the love. Exploit the full range of the instrument by learning the nuances of playing in different octaves.
I used to practice a lot on one string at a time. I also practiced playing across the strings, so you want to cover all bases and play according to the sound you’re going for.
I think of Hawaiian playing as playing up and down the string and country or western a little more across. I use both with maybe a little extra Hawaiian sauce.
