Topic: String Zing addendum - Roller nut issue |

I didn't want to hijack the other thread which focused on "zing" issues with fingers.
I have a StageOne. Lately, my 5th string is zinging away when I pick the string (open). If I touch the roller at the nut, it makes the zing go away.
How do I fix this? |

You might also turn the roller just a little when you change the string. _________________ Cops aren't paid much so I steel at night. |

Do you put a drop of oil on the roller surface or the axle, and then turn it? |

The axle. Putting it on the roller would make the string slide over the roller, not grab it and turn it. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . Put a new string on it. Leave it long so you get many winds, and wind it towards the knob ending up with the string right against the casting. This increases the angle of the string after it passes through the roller and holds the loose roller firmly against the side of it's slot. Next step, save up for an Encore. _________________ Emmons SKH Le Grande, '73 Fender P/J bass, Tick tack bass, Regal high strung, USA Nashville 112. |

Same as Ron here. That will take care of the problem. Paul Franklin will tell you the same thing. |

Hmm. I can see that this would stop the buzzing; but, now you're adding friction to the side of the roller, inviting tuning issues on raises and lowers. |

You say "lately". Did you not have this issue previously? If not, what has changed? |

My thoughts, exactly! I'd suggest just loosening the string a little, give the roller a half-turn, and then do like Jim said - add a drop of oil and then re-tune. |

The suggestion offered by Ron Pruter may be the most effective in this instance, that is to wind the string such that it moves the roller to the side of the slot.
There were a couple of batches of roller bridges made where the slots for strings 5 & 6 were a bit on the wide side. Investigation showed that the ancient cutters for slots 5 & 6 on the ancient horizontal milling machine we use to make that part had a few gnarly teeth. We replaced the cutters and now all is well on the batch that were just made last month.
As Chris noted it is only a problem when playing the string open. Winding to the side is not likely to actually cause a problem in this instance. |

Check the slot the roller sits in. Look straight down on the roller and string with a good light and magnifying glass. It there happens to be some sort of burr in the slot it may be forcing the roller out of line with string pull and the string is touching the side of the roller not the bottom.
I had a problem ghost buzz on a steel that had a powder coated nut roller support. I found the string slightly out of line with the roller grove. I removed the rollers and found a small lump of powder coating had drooped into the slot. 3 or 4 strokes of a flat needle file and the buzz disappeared.
If they had trouble with a mill cutter it may have put imperfection in the slot causing the roller to not sit in perfect line. Good Luck finding the problem and a quick cure. |

Problem emerged a few weeks ago. I bought the guitar new a couple years ago. Thinking on it now, however, I may have noticed it after a string change. Which makes me wonder...
I did make sure the string was sitting properly in the slot. Looked good. I'll take a closer look. Maybe I have too few winds on the peg? |
