It's so unfortunate that Tom Palmer has left us, not only did D2F provide fantastic covers and service, but Tom was a really nice guy, I enjoyed the times we chatted via email.

What other companies are around that provide similar covers and service? I really like the look, feel and fit of D2F, and I need another cover for a new guitar.

Thanks!

Does anyone know what kind of material D2F used for their covers?
It certainly had a nice feel to it, and was rigid enough to hold it's shape and be be quite form fitting, IIRC.
(I'm just curious about the material, and am in no way throwing shade on the other folks who make great covers).

I saved this D2F Covers history text from the website when it was still up. Tom explains the origin of the cover design and, helpful as always, specifies the exact material too.

He was a really great guy and I was glad to have known him.

Tom Palmer wrote:
Most of my life I have been a salesman, musician, and gear head. In 1997 I took up playing the pedal steel guitar. The lead guitar player for the band that I was in at the time was experienced in upholstery and commercial fabrics. He asked me if I would like him to make a cover for my pedal steel guitar and I thought it would be a great idea.

As he carefully measured the dimensions of my instrument, I told him I would like to keep the instrument plugged in and ready to play without having to remove the instrument cable. A week later he delivered the nicest, most professionally made cover I had ever seen for a steel guitar, complete with a cut out for the instrument cable.

The material was a Polyester Vinyl Canvas which was bonded to a quarter inch of foam padding with a nylon tricot interior. I was more than impressed with the workmanship and quality of this cover. I immediately had him make a cover for my amplifier (I still use that cover to this day).

I build covers for local musicians, Steels, Amps. and Key Boards.
I build covers from Marine Grade Naga Hyde. It is the heaviest, Toughest and Ultra Violet (Sun resistant) material to make covers from.

I just got in my first cover from from TUKI. They get all my business from now on. I have had D2F and the
TUKI wins hands down. They use a thicker 1/2" padding. They have a flap that tucks underneath the handle, and a 2" wide removable Velcro strap that goes underneath the amp so the cover can't slide up. They shipped fast. They have covers for 15,000 different products already on file. Not only that, they make custom covers at no extra charge. Made of the same material as D2F. Check out their website.

I have D2F and bought two TUKI covers after D2F folded.
If I wanted a padded cover I would go for TUKI.

Thanks for all the replies, guys.

I just don't care for vinyl. The D2F spoiled me.

Like some mentioned, the way the material holds shape, and the look and feel I prefer.

Studio Slips looks promising.

Funny thing, I have D2F cover for a Big-Box Marshall head, and apart from the depth of the cover (it hangs low) it fits my new guitar exactly. If only it didn't have a hole in the top for the handle...

Mike,

I just spoke with Sean Davin, who was formerly employed by Tom Palmer and used to make all the covers for D2F back when they were in business. Sean now works for a company in Seattle by the name of Commercial Fabric Manufacturers (CFM).

https://commercialfabricmfg.com/

CFM is currently supplying D2F style covers for Telonics (amp and cabinet covers and volume pedal pouches).

Unfortunately, Tom's son, Franklin shut down the D2F business and took all the patterns with him after Tom's passing. Sean told me that he'd be willing to start making D2F style leg bags, so I agreed to send him one of mine to copy, so CFM could at least start providing those for now. Who knows, perhaps they may be willing to get into the steel guitar and amp cover business, at least on a limited basis.

Stay tuned...
