Does anyone know who teaches lap steel via Skype? I hear Troy Brenningmeyer does now. I have emailed Joe Ely but haven't heard back. I have taken lessons with George Boards but he doesn't seem to be teaching anymore. Any suggestions?

What style of music do you want to play? I learn from Alan Akaka but I am pursuing Hawaiian music particularly...

I’ve been taking lessons with John Ely for several years, and we’ve worked on traditional Hawaiian tunes, hapa haole songs, Western swing, some Cole Porter and even the theme from “Goldfinger”! John is a master teacher as well as a great player, and a good guy too.

Here’s his website:

Good luck, whatever you decide. For me, it’s important to have a teacher who I know will kick my butt when necessary. This instrument can be so rewarding, but practice is what’s necessary.

Hey Neal, feel free to email me if you want. Like the others said, Alan Akaka and John Ely are awesome teachers and players. Good Luck!
