Has anyone ever taken off the first two strings and replaced them with a low G# and E? This would give me the range of an extended E9th. Besides losing the ability to duplicate well known licks, what are the advantages? Would Bobbe Seymour's Z knee lever work with this set-up?

I used an extended bass on my Carter Starter--keeping strings one and two, sacrificing the middle F# and lo D in favor of a lo A and E--for a while and enjoyed it, but switched back.
I'm saving extended E9 for a 12- or 14 string, which would be my suggestion to you.

You didn't mention what style of music you are playing, but if it's classic or modern country, DON'T DO IT.

Go over to the tab section and look carefully how often the 1st and 2nd strings are used. There's a good reason. They fill in holes in the scales between strings 3, 4, and 5. Especially for uptempo stuff, it's just faster to grab that 1st string rather than moving the bar or using the C pedal to get the F#. There are also a lot of unison notes you can take advantage of when you move the 1st and 2nd strings a half or whole tone.

By the same token, look at how rarely the 9th and 10th strings are used in tab. It is great to have the lower range (a major reason why I play a 12 string) but you will sacrifice a lot of the flexibility and power of the E9 tuning by removing strings 1 and 2.
