That is why I sold my Carter Starter on eBay. Those people bid stuff up amazingly high, depending on how it is advertised. I got well above what my starter would have brought anywhere else. In fact, I kept the learning materials, bar and picks and still got nearly what a new one would cost at musicians friend. I have seen a lot of Harley Davidson stuff get bid up so high it was amazing to watch. Recently, I bid 10 bucks on a Harley charm for my wife. It ended at 23 bucks, so I drove over to the dealership and bought it new for her, for 12.50. Uninformed buyers have driven most of the relatively good deals off eBay. There are still some good deals to be had now and then, but not like it was a few years ago.....James |

Unbelievable! You could buy TWO of them for that money. I can't believe people not checking into what something is worth before bidding like that. I wonder whether the winner was a shill... just doesn't make sense, unless W.C. Fields was right about suckers... |

A lot of money for a $400.00 guitar.
Ya gotta' love that E-Bay, if you you are the seller!
I think I'll stop selling direct to the public and just sell on E-Bay. Whew, I'm going to be rich!
Three Christmas seasons ago, I sold seven of these Mavericks for $299.00 each.
E-Bay, a great place to sell. |

Retail value: $2400!!!??? You gotta be kidding me.
It just goes to show you that sometimes you're only as good as your scam.
The weirdest thing is that someone actually paid a grand for a Maverick. |

The ad says it has 4 pedals. It only has 3.
I wonder what happened to the knee lever? |

Statistically speaking, I believe this is called an outlier. |

Ditto on the "you can't find a good deal anymore on evil-bay." I watched 2 used Stevens Dobro bars go for over $30. They retail new for $15 or so.
Just ridiculous. The "I must win this auction at all costs" reflex is very powerful.

Jim,
I think it was P.T. Barnum, not W.C. Fields,
who coined that 'sucker' phrase. I think. |

Yes, I believe you're right, Brother Chip. And as for it being an "outlier", well, I'd say the guy was an "outright liar"! (telling people it was "worth" $2,400!) |

Chip,
It was both. WC said (approximately) "Never give a sucker an even break, and never wisen up a chump."

FYI:
On a Swedish website, someone is right now offering a Maverick for just under $1,800... a raised neck laquer body in really good nick, including a volume pedal and hardcase.
Nicest Maverick I've ever seen (bought from Bobbe some years ago, allegedly), but still a 3+1 Maverick!

Hey you guys. I emailed the winner and he responded. His name is Dave and he knows that he made a mistake in purchasing the guitar for so much. He is not going to go through with the deal as he now knows something is not right. I am going to direct him to the steel forum and to this thread as he has asked for some help first of all in getting the right info on what this guitar was REALLY worth as opposed to how it was represented on Ebay and also if we could give him some help on getting a guitar for an entry level player. He is a newbie----but we all were at one time.
When and if he shows up, let's help him out OK. |

Bill,
I emailed him also, didn't get a reply. quote: Do you realize that the guitar you are bidding on is readily available for 300-$400.
This is a bottom of the line beginner instrument.

Guys,
Let's all bombard this Seller, actually he is not the seller, just a broker. But he needs to learn to research the items before he posts exorbant descriptions and prices. Let's try to get him to release this buyer without negative feedback, as this guitar was highly misrepresented. Go here and click on "Ask seller a question" http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7361534121&fromMakeTrack=true
I just sent this: quote: I as a member of steelguitarforum.com (over 5000 members) request that you release this buyer from this deal, as he is a beginner and was unaware that this is barely an entry level instrument, These guitars sold for less than $500 new, and are readily available for $300-$400. They are by no means "rare" nor have an inflated "vintage" value.
Thank You,
Bob Knight

I think the main reason Mavericks prices are so high is because they're bid on by guitarists. They want to learn to play the steel, but when they see one with double necks, a bunch of pedals & knee levers they get scared off. Mavericks don't "look" nearly as complicated.
They figure "Hmmmm, this don't look to bad. Maybe I can handle this thing". |

That's a good thing, Bill. I'd hate for the buyer to wander onto here and find out the hard way about his purchase.
No knees--I remember when I thought surely one knee lever would be enough, when you've got three pedals.... |

In order for the price to go that high, there had to be a 2nd mis-guided soul bidding against the winning bidder. I wonder if he'll take the 2nd chance offer now that the winning bidder isn't going through with the deal. |
