Does anyone know how thick the body of a fender Champ is? I am thinking of making a smaller Lap steel I can hual around to practice on. I figure the Champ is about a minimum thickness as I ought to make. I will be using air seasoned Alder for the wood, your opinion please?

Thank You in advance. Jim

My '62 measures 1-3/8" right between the control plate and the end of the fretboard. That includes the felt pad on the back.

Thank you for replying, it's thinner than I woul have thought. I guess 1 1/2, which is what I have, ought to work fine.

Best Wishes,

Jim

It's been said that the Studio Deluxe was simply a Champ with legs. I had suspected the Studio Deluxe might be thicker than the Champ due to its leg sockets. That would seem to be the case, as my Studio Deluxe (circa '59 - '60) measures approximately 1-3/4".

Thank you for your replies, designing it right now, going to use 1 1/2 thereabouts for thickness. Jack, are you the same Jack Hanson I talked to about ten years ago? That Jack Hanson lived somewhere in Western Washington then? Starting all over now.

FYI from what I have found out, here's some Fender Body Thicknesses:

Stringmaster Triple or Quad Ist neck+ 1 5/8"
Stringmaster Dual, Ist neck 2", same as 2nd neck T8,Q8
Champ 1 3/8"
Studio Deluxe 1 3/4"

Not me. Ten years ago I would have been in either Minnesota or Arizona; never lived in Washington.
