Tone, Technique, Timbre, etc you pick one. PLAY UNPLUGGED. Leave your amp OFF sitting in a corner.

You will end up playing harder with your right hand so you can hear yourself.

You will end up playing less stuff.

You will end up hanging on notes longer than you use because you want to hear them.

Now when you "plug in" your "T" will be better, cleaner, more accurate.

You notice I did NOT talk about settings or speakers or effects or pickups, just about YOU and the part YOU play in the bigger picture.

Side benefit, your band mates might want to continue being your band mates, always good to be wanted.

Thoughts!!!

I don't necessarily agree with that. Playing steel is just more than technique; it is learning how to get the most out of your equipment & accessories. I practice (the rare times I do) with the EXACT same setup I use onstage, which is 2 amps with stereo delay. Your tone dictates how you play, so I wanna practice with the tone I will get onstage for that reason.
