Although I loved JD’s playing in the DRB, my favorite album of theirs was the last one-“Life goes on” which wasn’t released in the United States at the time and featured Tom Brumley on steel. I loved his playing on that record-a perfect counterpoint to Chris Hillman and Herb Pederson’s Harmony vocals. This song “Throw me a lifeline” show that very well with the steel being the third vocalist or subtly rising after the chorus as a lifeline might rise when being tossed through the air.

We opened an outdoor Show in Billings Montana for DRB in the 90's I think, and Tom was with them on that show.
It was 105 degrees with the sun beaming as hard as ever right on Toms Steel.
He wasn't in the greatest mood that day, but Chris Hillman, John Jorgenson, and the Bass player we all very nice. |

I saw the DRB in 1991 at the local Grizzly Rose, just after Gene Clark had passed away. The band was in a dreadful mood over it and the venue soundman did an awful job.Tom was there, but it was so badly mixed-and ear-shattering loud-that he couldn't get a note in edgewise..Chris said on-mic he was subbing for JD. |

Olaf: Did you read all of the previous posts before doing yours?
Specifically, the second one, from Jeff Garden? |

Two other reasons I think this album is so important. After joining Rick Nelson’s band in 1968/69 he was featured on th “Live in concert” at the Troubadour on every track. On the following Rick Nelson albums while he was in the band he usually played on 3 or 4 songs at most. After he quit that band as far as I know, this Desert Rose Band album was the first that featured him on almost every song. Now there may be some gospel albums he recorded in Branson that have his playing but I’ve never seen or heard them. His work with Dwight Yokum was only one or two, songs per album. So this record is maybe the only place you can hear his later playing in a band context.
Second, although Chris and Herb often refer to how the DRB sound was Bakersfield influenced, to me this album really is the only one of theirs to sound that way. I have a version of Tom doing “Hello Trouble” with the band and I like his version better than the recorded one. My two cents😀🎼 |

You are right, Tom. Except for the second one "Rick Sings Nelson", which has lots of his playing. _________________ Fender Kingman, Sierra Crown D-10, Evans Amplifier, Soup Cube. |

I played for many years in
Mt a long time ago. Before each trip I would ask some one I knew there what the temp was.
If they said 40 deg for instance I would ask if that was above or below 0.
not joking. |

Just was wanting to know if anyone who has just recently ordered the "Life Goes On" CD from Sierra Records has received their copy yet. Placed an order on Mar 6 with PayPal...still waiting. I have operated a music mail-order business for 26 years. My customers would have tarred and feathered me if I didn't get stuff out within a couple of days. Received the CD yesterday. After giving it a first listen I felt like it should have gotten here 25 years ago! Absolute Desert Rose perfection...on all levels. Tom's performance is wonderful. I found it uncanny that he took a similar approach to J.D.'s "mindset" on all of the earlier DRB material...but, of course, with all of Tom's magic. The additional musicians involved with a touch of Jorgenson to boot made this project POP! Had the privilege of playing "package" shows with DRB in the early 90's...Tom had just joined the band although he wasn't on their current album "True Love"(P.F. filled in). Hearing this great band over the years with three different very capable steelers has been amazing and a good "lick" for all of us. Just a personal review on my part. Get this CD while you can! Hey Brint! Good to hear from you. I was referring to Paul Franklin who played on their "True Love" CD, but was never an official member of the band. Tom wasn't in the picture until after the project was completed. Actually talked with John Jorgenson about that project and gave me the impression that the "chemistry" between him and J.D. was preferred, although he gave all the credit to Paul for his contribution that he well deserved. Was a typically great DRB album(included a tune with Alison Krauss)but produced with more of a Nashville production than the West Coast thing. Play good! I got not just the CD, but a thank you email from John DelGatto, owner of Sierra Records:
"Dear John McClung:
Thank you for the mention at the steelguitar forum for the Desert
Rose Band CD, Life Goes On. We have been selling it off and on since
the late 90s. It is hard to get and in fact up until your mentioned,
we only sold three copies in the last two years! I thought we never
run out, so far we are ok.
One of my goals is to release on CD the two classic steel guitar albums:
Suite Steel
Pacific Steel Company
Pete Kleinow was a good friend, Al Perkins is an old friend. I
spent my Sunday mornings in the early 60s watching Red Rhodes on
KCOP-TV Channel 13, Cal's Corral.
I went to high school with the late Bill Bryson, bass player for the
Desert Rose Band. I was also his music publisher. I knew Curb
Records was not obligated to pay royalties to the band so I out of
whatever sales I receive from that CD, I pay Chris Hillman direct
with a token royalty.
Thank you again for the plug.
Regards,
John Delgatto, Founder/President"
I'm hoping he can really release those 2 steel albums, they've never been on CD and have some killer material. I have vinyl of both. _________________ E9 INSTRUCTION
