Last Day (Thurs, 3/29) on this 1937 Rickenbacher Silver Hawaiian Lap Steel with the 1.5" horseshoe magnet (Will not go any lower). Serial #D293, which doesn't just make it one of the first Ricks ever made, but also makes it one of the first fully electric guitars ever made. Hard to believe she's nearly 80! Just check out the pic below from the newspaper found inside her.
]
The "Pat. Pending" stamp marks it as among the first of the Silver Hawaiian models made. The SH was Rick's top-of-the-line at the time, and features the famous 1 ½" horseshoe pick-up, and a single volume knob for that sweet pre-war Rickenbacher tone.
As happens with these models, the body was stuffed with newspaper (and lookee what we found):
The guitar plays and sounds beautifully, and is all original except for a really nice set of Martin open tuners.
This is a sweet, genuinely beautiful Rick Silver Hawaiian Lap in excellent vintage condition with minor pitting as seen in the pics. Please look over all the pics (there are more in another posting below).
...and includes its original West Craft custom hard shell case (in pretty good shape, except for a small corner tear, and a handle that could use replacing - see pics below). I took the guitar to the Vintage Guitar show in Franklin, TN yesterday for a small jam session with some dealer friends and everyone was blown away by the guitar's look, sound, and how the latches on the 80 year-old case popped right up.
SOLD to the first and ONLY offer (Pending Payment). Thanks. _________________ Remington Steelmaster S8 w/ custom Steeltronics pickup. Gene decided this isn't the guitar he's looking for. Told me he wants a 1937 Silver Hawaiian made of wood, not metal. I let him know that no such model exists. Good example, however, of why offers are best made via PM. Thanks for your interest, Gene--you're a good guy; was nice messaging with you! _________________ Remington Steelmaster S8 w/ custom Steeltronics pickup. Guys: take a close look at the pickup thumbscrew clip on Vol side.. you can clearly see the print. Not many of these early issue versions come up for sale. You could be in for a long wait till another shows, maybe not in as nice a condition/play ready. 😮. |

Thanks for that observation, Jon! Yup, this is one of the very first steels Rickenbacker ever made, and it was its highest end model. It's actually among the first electric guitars ever made. And I have scoured the web. There are a very few of these available anywhere, and if they are, they're considerably more expensive.
I'll post a few more pics later today! _________________ Remington Steelmaster S8 w/ custom Steeltronics pickup. Vox MV-50 amplifier + an 1940's Oahu cab w/ 8" American Vintage speaker. J. Well, Steve (Can I call you Steve?), they stuffed the hollow body with newspapers because it was a lot cheaper than stuffing it with twenties. Oh, and it helps prevent feedback.
Here's a few more pics, including ...
...a better pic of the "Patent Pending" stamp Jon noticed.

Have been playing this guitar all week and it is an absolutely lovely example of a late 1930 high-end steel guitar. PM if you're interested. _________________ Remington Steelmaster S8 w/ custom Steeltronics pickup. Vox MV-50 amplifier + an 1940's Oahu cab w/ 8" American Vintage speaker. J. I used to own this guitar. In fact, I installed the Martin tuners as the originals fell apart. This is a unique guitar as it is made of steel instead of the usual brass. Most Silver Hawaiians used stamped brass. This also uses a chrome plated nut and bridge which is only found on the very early guitars. The later ones used bakelite and it has a very different sound. The pickup is fantastic. This was the best sounding hollow body Ric I have played. Good luck with the sale. |

Harry: I've been looking all over for one of the more recent owners of this guitar. The job you did on the tuners is fantastic, so thanks. And I greatly appreciate the kind words on the sale. I genuinely wish I could afford to hold on to it because you're right--it sounds like a dream straight out of the 1930s! _________________ Remington Steelmaster S8 w/ custom Steeltronics pickup.
