Running with information supplied by John Swain, I now have the weight of my D-10 Zum in the case down to 35.6 Lb. The pedal bar, rods. and leg's I'm a case that weighs 14 Lb. I had some 1" case lining foam and a plush throw I had never used, so I lined the case. The space left over on one side is used for an extension cord with power strip on the end. The keyboard case was $24.95, Inc. shipping, from Musicians Friend. The shotgun case is from Optics (something) and was $16.00 plus 12.00 shipping.

George, which keyboard case did you buy? I've used this soft case system for about 10 years or so. It does solve the weight problem. I added a nylon strap handle at the short end, two handles makes moving it around easier.

A few observations:

You may need to add some type of board under the guitar to make it a little sturdier and easier to assemble/disassemble. Same for the back (upper side as in the picture). I used birch ply panel board. (1/8"). Masonite will work, it's a little heavier and not as strong.

The lower left corner will bear most of the impact and weight. That's the upper left as you see the guitar in the picture. Be sure that corner is well padded. A D-10 guitar will exert plenty of weight on that area. That assumes you store the guitar upright with the changer end down.

I found most of the keyboard cases have weak zippers that will eventually come loose and fail.

Getting a snug fit is important. If the guitar flops around in the case it will be annoying to move around.

I've just built a hard case with that same 1/4" paneling and gray carpet. Not as light but more secure and you can stack stuff on top.

I'd be interested in using a soft case again if I can find one the right size, durable and with sturdy wheels. Very Happy

I just did the same thing with my BMI D-10. I converted to SD-10 with a pad, bought a keyboard case and small shotgun case from Amazon. The keyboard case even has a pocket big enough for my volume pedal. Us old guys have to be creative to keep totin' these things around.

John, both cases I used were the ones John Swain mentioned in his post a few months ago. I don't have the model numbers, but the shot gun case was a Bulldog brand and the keyboard was Kace, I believe. If you can't find John's original post, let me know and I will dig up the information for you. He just posted above, so maybe he can help you out.

With the 1" foam, there is no movement of the guitar whatsoever. On our gigs, it goes into my brother's SUV on it's edge, so the bridge and tuning keys are not face down. If I have to make another one due to zipper failure, I will certainly add a thin piece of plywood as you suggested.

George,

Ain't it great!?

I lined mine with two-inch foam, available at any Joanne's Fabric store. I cut some Styrofoam blocks to support the cabinet around the tuner and changer ends, and glued them to a sheet of heavy cardboard. That protects the tuning buttons and strings from bearing weight. I'm careful to place the case on a flat surface to assemble the guitar. In my car it rides on the back seat, strapped in. Transporting it on the long edge like you do in the SUV should also be fine.

The shotgun case is delightful for legs, rods, and pedal bar (Thanks, John Swain).

Just curious, but are you sure that's not four-inch foam?
