I found this helpful series of vids with Eddie Rivers showing A6th tuning.
Here are some links but there are several others in the series on YouTube:
A6th Basics-

I am planning to try this A6th tuning on a 6-string 22.75" Scale Lap Steel.
Low to High:
Tab:

 C#     E    F#     A    C#     E
.036  .030  .024  .022  .017  .014

I noted that on my S12U Pedal Steeel, these notes are the same as strings 9 through 4, with the A+B Pedals held down.

Hi Pete,
A Good reason for A6th is that whatever you learn there works on your E9th pedal steel later with the AB pedals down.
Eddie Rivers is a great picker....
Good luck,
Andy

Love listening to Eddie Rivers and Asleep at the Wheel.. I have seen him live a few times. He gets a great sound and tone and he is a very fluid player.
I realize that it is a very limited market but I wish he would release a series of instructional material on A6.
Is he using a standard A6 with an F# on the bottom?
ie; F# A C# E F# A C# E
Sounds like it to me...... I have been considering a switch from C6 to A6..... A6 sounds a bit stronger to me than C6

A6th v C6th, There is a lot more tab for C6th but I don't often use tab.
I like the richer tone of A6th and the keys are in positions I'm used too.

I'm not sure what bottom string he uses.
I have an F# bottom string, but sometimes change it to G for the 7th tone.

Top stuff, Pete. Thanks. I like A6th a whole lot. There are a number of single neck guitars that I covet, and that D8 Stringmaster (?) is one of them. Its such a handsome and logical shape, and of course they sound great.

I play a lot in A6 - it's a great tuning, was favored by a few players along the way (!), and on a 6 string retunes to C6+A7 fast.

C# E F# A C# E to C# E G A C E

a half-step either way, F# to G, C# to C

Thanks for posting the links.

I didn't mention it, but sometimes do retune to C6th if I want to work out some tab and not think too hard about transposing. Shocked Rolling Eyes Very quick and easy to change from one to another.

I re-tune rarely out of A6th, but I can go to B11, C6, E9, and a kind of fudged C#m7. That should keep me busy for while.

I really like A6 tuning on a 7-string instrument with a high E and a low A. It's alot like playing a 6-string C6 on strings 2-7, only three half-steps lower. It necessitates employing heavier strings, and produces a thicker, fatter sound than the thinner C6 string set.

Jack I also really like A6 on my 7 string lap steel and resonator! I do retune to AC#EGACE on occasion.

Hi Andy, thats pretty-much it. I tend to tune the 8th string to G in A6th. The easy re-tune to E9 is something I am ashamed to admit I only recently woke up to.

Not so obvious...
After all you need too retune 7 of the 8 strings and 5 of those by two half tones. Whoa! Rolling Eyes Embarassed
Really it is almost possible to go from just about any 6th tuning to almost any other given enough messing about. A6th to B11th or C6th are quick and easy... The others, not so much. Very Happy

I have a triple neck 8 string non-pedal guitar.

My first neck is a E13 tuning...second neck is an A6 tuning. In a 1,4,5 chord progression the frets positions line up perfectly for transitioning from one neck to the other. And of course the third neck is a B11, that will complete the 1,4,5 progression.

I also play a Sierra 12 string, so I am use to the open chord, followed by AB pedals down, followed by E lever engaged and not moving off the same fret position (1,4,5).
