I just pruchased a Shobud "The Professional"
Its a early 70's guitar but I would like to know when it was manufactured . The Serial Number is: 3201.The previous owner died shortly after purchasing it and it has not been played since. It needs some adjustment and cleaning but it is like new. |

Serial numbers on those Buds don't tell very much about dates.
One clue might be the inlay. What kind of inlay does it have? |

Hi Skip,
It has the inter-twinging ribbon (rope ?)
inlay. There was an information sheet telling how to tune the pedals and knee levers written on "Music City Manufacturing Commpany" letterhead.. It has 8 pedals and 4 knees. |

Unless it was a custom order, two knee levers were added. The stock Professional has two knee levers.
Unofficially, I'd say that if the guitar is red or red/natural, has the 2-screw mounted pickups and has the white/black diamond inlays, it would be a 1970-71. If it is brown, has 3-screw mounted pickups and has the rope inlay, it would be a 72.
Like I said, unofficial but this is what I remember from back then. I have a red one with zig-zag inlays, which we think was custom made for someone, since the pickup selector and tone switches are between the necks, not on the endplate.

What Herb said.
I've got a '72 single neck Prof, and it's got the rope inlay. Older ones usually had diamond inlay or, sometimes a zig-zag pattern. I've also seen a few early ones with an inlay of small rectangles.
They stopped making them in late 72 or early 73, when the ProII came out. I'm not exactly sure when they started production. '69 maybe? |

Mine says the Professional on the right hand end and I bought it new in Feb. 1973.
John Coop has it right now upgrading it.
It came with 1 knee lever that is all.

Herb, I think you nailed it. It is a Brown
finish with the Heart, spade, diamond and club fret board. It has the three screw pickups, and the pickup selector is on the end plate. I'm guessing that the extra knee levers were custom ordered because they all match and they are the small tear drop style.
Thanks everyone for the feed back. |
